If you enjoy exploring the universe on your PC, Gaia Sky is worth a try. It’s open source and developed by the Gaia group at the Astronomisches Rechen-Institut in Heidelberg. It runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS.
The data accuracy is really solid because it pulls from real data collected by ESA’s Gaia satellite. The satellite itself was launched in 2013 and operated until March 2025. During its mission, it measured the position, distance, and motion of stars with insane precision. The result is a star catalog called Gaia DR3, containing data on over 1.8 billion stars. That’s exactly what you’re exploring when you open Gaia Sky.
The way datasets work here is kind of unique. When you install Gaia Sky, the app comes completely empty with no data at all. You download whatever datasets you want through the built-in download manager. Options range from the full Gaia DR3 star catalog, galaxy data from SDSS, a catalog of stars nearest to our Sun, to high-res textures for planet surfaces. You basically pick how detailed you want to go depending on your needs and storage space.
What’s cool is that stars aren’t just static dots on a screen. You can see the actual motion of every star in the galaxy, and even fast-forward thousands of years to watch how their positions shift. This isn’t a generated animation, it’s a simulation built on real measurements taken from space. If you’re more on the technical side, you can even bring your own datasets in VOTable, FITS, or CSV format and Gaia Sky will read them directly.
That said, Gaia Sky is more of a scientific tool than an exploration game. If you’re after cinematic and dramatic visuals, it’s probably not what you’re looking for and you’d be better off with something like SpaceEngine. But if you want to know where stars actually are based on real data, Gaia Sky is one of the best things you can get for free.
