I’ve seen this pattern literally thousands of times in the last 15 years of helping people.
A client runs a GI-MAP. Finds H. pylori, Blastocystis, or bacterial overgrowth. Works with a practitioner and runs a real protocol - antimicrobials, binders, probiotics, mucosal repair. Does everything right.
And feels better. Partially.
The bloating drops 50%. The brain fog improves but doesn’t fully clear. Energy comes back - most of the way. They pass a threshold where they feel functional again and assume the remaining symptoms are just healing time.
Three months later, nothing has moved further or they start relapsing and going backwards with their weight, mood, cravings, sleep, anxiety, etc.
I know this story because I lived it. And I’ve watched it unfold with client after client, thorough people who did real functional medicine work and still hit a ceiling.
Here’s what’s actually happening: the gut findings are real. The infections are real. The dysbiosis is real. But the gut damage isn’t the source - it’s the result. Something upstream created those conditions. And in my clinical experience, that upstream driver is mold exposure more often than anything else.
You cannot fully repair a gut that’s still sitting in a toxic environment. And you cannot restore a mucosal barrier that mycotoxins are still actively breaking down.
Finding something on a GI-MAP doesn’t mean you found the root. It means you found the damage that was allowed to happen due to a dysfunctional immune system and toxic load that “let the bad guys come in”.
I used this analogy on a podcast with my colleague Dr. Paul Saladino: essentially mold appears to open the back door to the immune system and allow bad bugs to move into the gut and start robbing you of your nutrients.
The three tests that tell the full story: a GI-MAP run alongside a Mycotoxin profile and Organic Acids. The GI-MAP shows what’s living in your gut and how inflamed it is. The Mycotoxin screen shows whether mycotoxins are actively damaging the environment that gut lives in.
If your practitioner ran only a GI-MAP, they saw downstream damage. They never asked what caused it.

Below: the clinical mechanism behind why mycotoxins specifically dismantle the gut barrier, the sIgA piece almost no gut protocol addresses, what the research actually shows about dysbiosis as a downstream consequence of mold load, and exactly how I sequence the protocol when both are present.
