I Took a Meter Through My House. Here's What Was Actually High.

I’ve told clients to turn off the router at night for years. Get an ethernet cable. Keep the phone across the room. Standard recommendations. Reasonable starting points.

Then I got a gaussmeter.

The first thing I measured was the router - the device every EMF conversation starts with. The reading was lower than I expected. Not nothing. But not the highest thing in the room.

Then I walked toward the wall.

The meter quickly spiked to 9mG and even as high as 20mG. Keep in mind building biologists suggest no higher than 0.3mG especially for bedrooms and sleeping areas.

Right on the outside of that wall was the smart meter.

Here’s what most people don’t realize: your WiFi router emits radiofrequency radiation - a specific type of EMF that operates in the gigahertz range. When you turn off the router, that signal stops.

But there’s a different type of EMF running through your home 24 hours a day regardless of what you turn off. It operates at 50-60 Hz - the frequency of your electrical system. It comes from the wiring in your walls, the breaker panel, the smart meter, the appliances. You can’t turn it off without turning off the power. Most in the industry call this dirty electricity.

There’s also magnetic fields which are the hardest to shield against. Research confirms that magnetic fields are the most impactful on human and pet health. Power lines, transformers, electrical boxes, breaker boxes, smart meters, electric stoves, hair dryers, hair straighteners and curling irons, and similar appliances emit the highest magnetic fields.

This is what a gaussmeter measures. And in most homes, it’s not the router that generates the highest bedroom reading.

1. The wall your bed is against - specifically, what’s on the other side.

The most common high reading I find isn’t from a device. It’s from the breaker panel or power meter on the other side of drywall. Most homes have an electrical panel on an interior wall. That wall shares space with a room - often a bedroom. Magnetic fields don’t stop at drywall and easily penetrate.

If you’ve never measured the wall behind your headboard, that’s where to start.

2. The exterior bedroom wall with a smart meter.

Smart meters sit at the home’s electrical service entry point. If your bedroom is on the side of the house where the meter is mounted, measure that wall from the inside. Specifically where your head or body would be while sleeping.

3. Within 3 feet of your head - your charger, smart charger, or speaker.

This one surprises people consistently. Phone chargers, speakers, smart clocks sitting on a nightstand at pillow level are among the most common high readings in a bedroom sweep. The fix is free: replace it with a battery-operated clock or use your phone as an alarm with the phone across the room or on airplane mode - not on the nightstand.

4. The electric blanket or heated mattress pad.

These are designed to sit against the body for hours. Some generate significant fields during operation. The standard recommendation is to run it before bed to warm the mattress, then turn it off before getting in. Not while sleeping. I was blown away at the levels coming from these.

5. Around and beneath the bed frame.

In older homes especially, wiring runs under floors and through walls in paths that can sit directly beneath where someone sleeps. Sweep the meter low - along the floor, along each wall - and watch for changes as you move position.

In the bedroom where I measured very high levels of magnetic fields, I could’ve put shielding material against the wall but it was easiest to just put the bed on the opposite wall where the levels where 0.3mG. This is especially important for little kids with developing brains and bodies.

I lived in a rental house many years ago and there were above ground power lines right outside my bedroom. Unfortunately the levels were 7-20mG and my sleep was horrible the entire time I lived there. There would’ve been no shielding against that.

The building biology guideline that’s most commonly cited in practice is 3 milligauss max but preferably 0.3 as the precautionary benchmark for sleeping areas - based on the epidemiological research that informed IARC’s Group 2B classification of ELF magnetic fields.

This is not a government limit. The US has no residential ELF-MF standard. It’s a precautionary number derived from the childhood leukemia epidemiology and adopted by building biologists as a practical residential target.

The meter I recommend starting with is the Trifield TF2. It quite accurately measures RF, electric fields, and magnetic fields on separate modes. Magnetic field mode is the one you want for this sweep. Under $200. Takes 10 minutes to walk a bedroom.

Identifying and reducing the exposure source is step one.

For the nervous system recovery side - especially for people who’ve been in an elevated baseline state for a long time - GABA Chews are what I use. Naturally fermented, bioidentical GABA. 1-2 chews 30 minutes before bed. The goal is giving the body a direct substrate to settle rather than waiting for a self-regulation that hasn’t been happening.

It appears that those with MCAS from Lyme, Bartonella, Babesia, Mold Toxcity, Covid, Vaccine Reactions react the most to EMF.

In that case I also use my Histamine and Mast Cell Support formula to quiet reactivity.

I also reach for these before social events when I want to feel calm and less reactive to fragrances, peoples laundry, etc, without alcohol like your typical person does to “relax”. They travel well. And for kids whose nervous systems need help settling at night: half a chewable of the GABA works.

In my 1-on-1 and group functional medicine program, the bedroom environment is one of the areas we assess when someone has cleared the primary pathogen and toxin layers and is still not fully there. The electrical environment is often the last thing checked - and sometimes the thing that explains why progress stalled.

For now: get a meter. Measure your bedroom before you do anything else.

The router might not be the highest thing in the room.
