On the Risky.Biz #824 podcast, a GreyNoise observation was mentioned in passing: telnet traffic had dropped to near zero across the internet. Not a spike, not an anomaly — a disappearance.
The likely explanation: a vulnerability in the telnet protocol was about to drop publicly, and service providers had quietly been nudged into blocking it ahead of time.
The lesson is counterintuitive. You’re trained to watch for spikes, anomalies, and outliers. But the absence of a pattern you’d normally expect is also a signal — sometimes a stronger one. Someone already knew something, and acted on it before it was public.
Second-order thinking applied to threat intel: when something stops happening, ask why.
