The Denial That Raised Its Own Margin

Monday.com was supposed to be the poster child for the modern workplace. A company that built its entire brand on the idea that teams work better when they have the right tools to collaborate, communicate, and stay aligned. 80,000 customers used Monday.com to manage their people. The product was, at its core, a bet that human coordination is worth investing in.

On July 22, 2026, co-founder Eran Zinman told employees the company was cutting 630 positions. Twenty percent of the global workforce. Gone.

“This is not to replace people with AI,” Zinman said.

He said it was about vision. About focusing Monday.com on a new chapter. About becoming an AI-native platform that could serve customers in ways the old structure could not support. The language was careful, practiced, human.

Then the SEC filing landed. The same announcement that carried the layoff notice also raised Monday.com’s non-GAAP operating margin guidance from roughly 13% to 15%. Two percentage points. The math is not subtle. When you remove 20% of your people and your margin forecast goes up in the same document, the document is saying what the CEO would not.

This is the pattern that has become the signature move of 2026. The public statement says vision. The filing says extraction. The CEO frames the cut as a pivot toward AI-native product development. The spreadsheet frames it as fewer salaries funding higher margins. Both are true. But only one was said out loud.

Monday.com’s customers use the platform to track headcount planning, team capacity, and resource allocation. The product literally visualizes how many people you need to get work done. The company that built that product just concluded it needed 20% fewer of its own.

Nobody at Monday.com was told they were replaced by AI. They were told the company was evolving. The margin guidance told them the rest.

A company that sells workforce coordination tools discovered 630 of its own coordinators were the margin it was missing.
