Monday.com was the rare company that said the quiet part out loud, and made it sound generous.
Their pitch to the market was a work platform where AI agents and human employees sit side by side. Not AI replacing humans. Not humans supervising AI. Coworking. The product name was not metaphorical. Monday.com literally called its AI features a collaboration layer. The positioning was clear: the future of work is not fewer people. It is people and agents completing tasks together.
The employees who built that platform had every reason to believe it.
They designed the agent workflows. They shipped the integrations. They watched the product roadmap transform from project management into an “AI work platform” and understood they were building the thing that would carry the company forward.
On July 22, 2026, Monday.com cut 620 of them.
Twenty percent of the workforce. Not from a struggling division. Not from a product that failed. From the company projecting 20% revenue growth for the full year. The restructuring charge landed between $45 million and $55 million, a line item the company could absorb without revising guidance.
The CEO framed the cuts as a pivot, not a retreat. The company was “focusing on AI.” The humans who built the AI focus were the cost of focusing harder.
Here is the detail that does not leave you. Monday.com’s entire go-to-market identity is that AI agents and employees are coworkers. Equal participants. The product exists to prove that thesis. And the company that sells that thesis just demonstrated, with its own headcount, that it does not believe it. Six hundred twenty people learned that “AI and humans complete work together” has a silent suffix. Until the humans are the line item.
The restructuring charge was $45 to $55 million. The revenue growth guidance did not change. The product positioning did not change either. Monday.com will continue to sell the idea that AI and humans work side by side.
It will just do it with fewer humans to prove wrong.
