Hello, Moving Through travelers!
We’re under a winter storm warning here in northern Michigan, with heavy lake effect snow and temperatures in the teens (“feels like -5” as I write this), and it appears plenty of other areas of the Midwest are experiencing the same.
While I’ve opted to mostly stay indoors today—I pushed myself to keep up with my weekday morning Yoga with Adriene routine and have kept my treks outside to when the dogs need to go out—I did get outside this past weekend a fair amount. This was partly because the snowfall was so magical and made for the most peaceful snowshoe hike in the woods with Joe on Saturday afternoon, as well as for my nice-and-slow three-mile run that morning, and then a walk with our three dogs on Sunday. It just kept snowing, all weekend long.
I’ve also been reading a couple of terrific books, one a read-in-one-sitting kind of memoir, the other a reads-like-a-novel nonfiction book—I’ll be sharing more about these in the next newsletter!—and there’s something about the gusts of wind and snowdrifts out my window that have made burrowing under the blanket with a book all the more comforting and enjoyable these past few days.
One of my most popular podcast episodes about winter running and exploring, and how to stay safe and warm—and have fun!—while out in the elements.
All-new winter-themed items I’ve just added to my online store and that I think you’ll love.
Two upcoming races here in northern Michigan I highly recommend checking out. I’ll be at both and would love to see you there!
You can run outdoors and explore in the elements all winter long — and even come to love it! (OK, at the very least, embrace it.)
In this podcast episode (click the play button at the top of this post to listen), I stop by downtown Traverse City’s Running Fit (now known as Feet Fleet) to talk winter running and outdoor exploring with running shoe experts Marc McCombs and Alison Goss. Both are lifelong runners who share their tips and tricks for staying warm and safe in Michigan’s cold, snowy and icy conditions. (Great tips for any cold-weather locale!)
Starting with socks (”Cotton is rotten”), shoes (hear why trail shoes can be a great option in certain winter conditions) and shoe traction, and covering the must-have clothing layers for outdoor running adventures, Marc and Alison share the latest gear and other essentials available. Michigan Runner Girl podcast producer (and runner) Jonny and me also chime in with their own winter running experiences. You’ll get head-to-toe ideas for getting out there and enjoying both the elements and your running this time of year.
This episode originally aired in winter 2019.
Do you run in the winter? What helps you stay warm and safe when you’re logging miles on snowy roads and trails? I’d love to hear!
I hope you’ll check out these wintry items just added—you’ll find three new hoodies, in a variety of colors—plus a new water bottle, perfect-sized mug for your morning coffee or tea, and glassware that includes a fun wooden top and straw (I love the can-shaped glass, and I especially am loving my cozy Winter Runner hoodie and coffee mug).
