The UAE's Next Sudan Massacre

The alarm bells are ringing again.

The UN is warning that another Sudanese city is about to be wiped out. And the United Arab Emirates, supported by the US, Israel and Big Tech is pretty successfully keeping us from talking about it.

In October of 2025, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) seized the city of El Fasher, the capital of Sudan’s North Darfur state after an 18 month seige. What followed is now recognized as the worst single day of mass murder in the 21st century. It’s impossible to get the true numbers, but the consensus is now that something like 60,000 people were murdered on or around October 26th, with piles of dead bodies that were visible from space. The RSF is a collection of Sudanese militias, but it is now widely recognized that their success is entirely due to a steady stream of money and weapons from the United Arab Emirates.

What made the El Fasher slaughter even more horrifying is the fact that it was long predicted. Neither side of the Sudanese civil war that started on April 15th, 2023 is all that appealing. Both the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) played a role in crushing Sudan’s brief democratic opening after the fall of decades long dictator Omar El-Bashir in 2019. Both forces have committed war crimes since 2023. But it rapidly became clear which side in the conflict was worse.

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) were born out of the Janjaweed militias that carried out the Darfur Genocide at the beginning of this century. Genocide is in the RSF’s DNA. The old dictator El-Bashir, in a typical dictator’s move, elevated the RSF to coup-proof his dictatorship. He set up the RSF as a military force and hierarchy to compete against the established Sudanese Armed Forces. In doing so, he sowed the seeds of the civil war that broke out in April 2023. By the beginning of 2024 it was clear that the RSF had not left its genocidal roots behind. This January 2024 Reuters report documents the RSF’s massacre of 10,000 people in a single city in June of 2023, a mere two months into the war. The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) are bad guys, but they don’t make a habit of murdering whole cities. Human decency and civilization requires an SAF victory.

There was no mystery or surprise in the savagery of El Fasher’s fall last October. The RSF is evil, and everybody who isn’t locked into UAE or US/Israeli propaganda knows it. Across the 18 month RSF siege of El Fasher, our fading journalistic and humanitarian institutions did everything they could to warn us what was coming. It happened anyway.

And now it’s happening again.

The fortunes of the war have gone back and forth multiple times. At the beginning of the war in 2023 it looked like the RSF was going to win against an unprepared SAF. They took much of Khartoum, Sudan’s capital and megalopolis, home to 13% of Sudan’s population. The RSF seemed to to be winning in Sudan’s heartland… and then they lost it through pure bloody-minded brutality.

Sudan’s public had no great affection for the SAF, but when it became clear that the only alternative the RSF was offering was rape and murder, many rallied to the less dangerous option. Thanks in part to support from Egypt and Saudi Arabia, the SAF was able to push the RSF out of much of the more heavily populated and more Arab North and East of the country.

Unfortunately, the RSF seems to be consolidating power to some extent in the more African West of the country. This presents the horrifying prospect of a collection of militias famous for genocidal violence against African populations becoming the government of Sudan’s more African populations. It’s analogous to a Nazi government of Israel. As you can see in the map above, The RSF is moving across the country, from West to East. El Fasher was the capital of North Darfur state, El Obeid is the capital of North Kordofan.

A horrifyingly similar situation is developing. El Obeid is now under siege by the RSF. El Fasher was as tragic as it was, in part because it had operated as the hub for refugees from all the previous RSF and Janjaweed crimes, going back decades. That’s the role that El Obeid plays now, after the fall of El Fasher. The UN and the few journalistic entities we have left that can afford to cover Africa are all warning that we are about to see the death of another city at the hands of the RSF.

Why aren’t the US, European and African Union governments doing anything?

How is an organization as evil and transparently homicidal as the RSF still operating?

Why isn’t everybody talking about this?

The answer to all of these questions is the United Arab Emirates. These horrors are occurring because the UAE directly funds the RSF, and its money, and its alliances with Israel and the United States have apparently made its actions untouchable.

Over the course of 2024, as the horrific crimes that Israel was and is committing in Gaza became harder to deny, Sudan became a common topic for pro-Israel online personalities. “If you care so much about genocide, why not focus on Sudan?” These comments were always very shallow. Blithely ignoring the fact that US tax payer dollars directly fund Israel’s crimes, Israel Superfans looked to crimes being committed in Sudan, Ethiopia and Yemen as proof that anybody complaining about Gaza was an antisemite. There was no serious analysis here, just Whataboutism.

I decided to do a more serious comparison in a live presentation late last year. The analysis below covers comparisons to Yemen, Ethiopia, Xinjaing, Syria and other horrific crimes this century.

I think the above video is worthwhile, if rather depressing. But it’s pretty clear that Israel Superfans don’t really care about Sudan. When they get below the surface of Whataboutism, they will most often deliver pro-UAE and Pro-RSF propaganda. Shaun Maguire, a partner at Sequoia Capital, one of Silicon Valley’s most storied Venture Capital firms, is a prominent Israel Superfan. He’s one of the most reliably pro-war, pro-Israel, Islamophobic and Anti-Mamdani voices on Twitter. On October 30th, 2025 as the RSF was destroying El Fasher, he took to Twitter to defend the UAE.

Unfortunately, in the media environment we have today, this kind of drivel is effective. It’s been well established that the UAE is the main reason the RSF is a factor in the civil war. We’ve known since 2023 that the UAE provides resupply, often on a weekly basis. The RSF is so reliant on this support that whenever it slows, as it briefly did in March and April of this year during the intense phase of the Iran war, the RSF starts losing. The UAE is the reason that hundreds of thousands of people have died in Sudan.

But aren’t Sequoia Capital, and other Military Industrial Complex propaganda outfits trusted sources of information? They make a lot of money, and they study this stuff for a living, maybe we shouldn’t believe Reuters, The New York Times or the United Nations? The propaganda in the above tweet doesn’t have to convince anybody. It just has to sow enough confusion for an interested party to become uninterested and move on to something else.

Why would MIC/Israel Lobbyists like Maguire and Sequoia Capital be interested in covering for a genocidal militia like the RSF? Well it’s pretty simple and pretty depressing. The underlying, more important reason is the fact that the UAE buys a lot of weapons and related technologies. Sequoia Capital and related moneyed ecosystems have a lot of Zombie Unicorns to sell, and Gulf monarchs are the only people who are rich enough and dumb enough to buy that stuff.

The UAE also makes the market for a lot of this defense tech. The UAE’s creation of war and chaos across Libya, Yemen, Syria, Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia and other countries provides markets for the surveillance, cybersecurity, AI and drone filth driving the unholy marriage between Big Tech and the US Military Industrial Complex. The “Startup Nation” image that Israel has been crafting for the past decade or so, relies in part on selling into the chaos that the UAE creates. Sequoia’s material interest in covering up and facilitating UAE crimes is real.

But there are a lot of people in the metastasized Military Industrial Complex who need more than filthy lucre to justify justifying genocide. Or at least they tell themselves they do. And that’s where the Abraham Accords come in. Both the Trump and Biden administrations have been tremendously interested in this fairy tale. Few people in the Foreign policy establishment know anything about the chaos the UAE is fomenting across the Middle East and North Africa. The only thing they know or care about in MENA is Israel. And back in 2020 the UAE signed a piece of paper saying they were at peace with Israel.

For a disturbing amount of people in Washington, DC, that piece of paper means the UAE can mass murder as many Africans as it wants. It means that the same propaganda apparatus that is trying to keep us from talking about Gaza, is also trying to keep us from learning anything about UAE crimes in Sudan. Unfortunately, they are proving to be more successful at driving Sudan off the agenda than they are at driving Gaza off the agenda.

Both should be on the agenda. All the time.
