Hi!
I can’t remember the last time I shared books I’ve recently read. I’m pretty sure it’s been quite some time. So instead of trying to figure out when the last time was or all the books I’ve read since then, I just pulled some off my shelf that I know I’ve finished in the last 6 months or so give or take a few… I think.
This list is a mix of YA, middle grade, and non-fiction. And I thought they were all wonderful! Instead of giving short book reports on each, if you see something that looks interesting, feel free to ask me about it. Or if you have any suggestions for future reads, let me know!
Fiction: (middle grade)
The Bookwanderers by Anna James ~ I loved how the main character’s favorite, well, characters from her books start showing up at her grandparents’ book shop and the fun that ensues after!
The Millicent Quibb School of Etiquette for Young Ladies of Mad Science by Kate McKinnon ~ So good! Fast read, quick wit, really fun… I have the 2nd one preordered coming this week!
The House at the Edge of Magic by Amy Sparkes~ Also very fun, clever story. I also have the next one on my never-ending TBR pile.
(YA) The Faraway Inn by Sarah Beth Durst~ If I was going to write a cozy fantasy story, this would be it! I loved it and all the magical creatures and characters. Its pacing is fast and unfolds the magic throughout the story. I hope there is a 2nd one.
Non-Fiction:
Abundant Ever After by Cathy Heller~ a must read! Cathy is one of my mentors and I love how she breaks down spiritual principles for easy application through stories and examples.
Embrace Your Power by Louse Hay~ “…help all women experience and take ownership of their self-love, self-worth, self-esteem, and rightful, powerful place in the world.” Great book.
Become Master of Your Imagination; At Your Command; and Awakened Imagination all by Neville Goddard~ These are transcripts of his lectures and teachings on the theme of mastering your imagination and your inner conversations. He was an eminent 20th century lecturer who devoted his life to the principles of manifestation and the power of imagination. There are many others.
Fiction:
Middle Grade: I’m currently reading The Underwild: River of Spirits by Shana Targosz. Not too far into it yet, but so far it’s a great apprentice-to-the-Ferryman story.
Adult: I’m reading The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst. It’s a fun “romantasy debut—a lush cottagcore tale full of stolen spell books, unexpected friendships, sweet jams, and even sweeter love.” I’m really enjoying it but it’s a bit slower than her YA (mentioned above) which I have to say I’m partial too.
Non-Fiction:
History: Papyrus: The Invention of Books in the Ancient World by Irene Vallejo. This book is a bit dense and is taking me awhile to get through but I’m also really liking it. I think the history of the written word is fascinating, from oral traditions to scrolls to books. “Irene shows books have always been a precious and precarious vehicle for civilization.”
Motivational: Wherever You Go, There You Are by Jon Kabat-Zinn. The one I’m reading is a 30th anniversary edition. This is broken in to bite-sized sections and the way her writes about mindfulness and mediation is simplified and easy to understand and apply to life. I’m really enjoying it.
Have you read any of these? What did you think?
What are you currently reading?
Have a great week!
~Morgan
