Prep (2023)

This task list is optimized for the high-density requirements of Ipe and the higher absorption rates of softwood timbers.

  • (1) lb Sunnyside 64216 TSP Tri-Sodium Phosphate All Purpose Cleaner
  • (5) lbs OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover Powder
  • (5) lbs Milliard Citric Acid powder
  • (2) gal Penofin F3XHWGA Natural Exotic Hardwood Penetrating Wood Finish (250-VOC)
  • (1) gal TWP 1530 Natural Low VOC Wood Preservation Stain

Phase 1: Preparation & Mixing

  • Clear the Area: Remove furniture. Move or cover nearby plants with plastic sheeting. Pre-wet any lawn or foliage near the deck with plain water to dilute runoff.
  • The Cleaner Mix (Batch for 4-Gallon Sprayer): 1. In a separate 5-gallon bucket, mix 4 gallons of very hot water. 2. Slowly stir in 4 cups of OxiClean and 2 cups of TSP until fully dissolved. 3. Let the solution settle for 2 minutes to ensure no undissolved granules remain.
  • The Brightener Mix (Prepare after Cleaner is used):
    1. In a clean bucket, mix 4 gallons of water (warm is fine).
    2. Dissolve 4 cups of Citric Acid powder.

Phase 2: The Cleaning Process

  1. Dry Application: Spray the Cleaner Mix onto the wood while it is dry. This allows the wood to “pull” the chemicals into the fibers rather than hitting a barrier of water.
  2. Sectioning: Work in manageable sections (e.g., the gazebo first, then the railing, then the deck floor).
  3. Dwell Time: Let the solution sit for 10-15 minutes.
    • Crucial: Do not let it dry. Use the sprayer to mist the wood if it begins to dry out.
  4. Agitation: Scrub the surface with a stiff-bristled synthetic brush. Focus on the grayed areas and corners where oil builds up.
  5. Initial Power Wash: * Use a 25° or 40° (green or white) nozzle.
    • Ipe: Keep the tip 6-8 inches away.
    • Gazebo Softwood: Keep the tip 12-18 inches away to prevent “furring” the wood.
    • Wash with the grain. Rinse until the water runs clear and no “soapy” bubbles remain.

Phase 3: Neutralizing & Brightening

  1. Wet Application: While the wood is still wet from the power wash, spray the Brightener Mix (Citric Acid) over everything.
  2. Observation: You will see the wood shift from dark/dull to a bright, “new wood” look within seconds.
  3. Dwell & Rinse: Let it sit for 5 minutes. Perform a final, thorough rinse with a standard garden hose or low-pressure power wash to remove all acid residue.

Phase 4: Drying & Mechanical Prep

  1. The 48-Hour Rule: Wait at least 48 hours of dry, sunny weather. The wood must be below 12%-15% moisture content. If the Ipe feels “cool” to the touch, it is likely still damp inside.
  2. Sanding:
    • Ipe Pickets/Deck: Use a random orbital sander with 80-grit paper. This removes the “fuzz” (lignin) raised by the water and opens the pores of the dense Ipe. Do not use 100+ grit or you will “seal” the wood via friction.
    • Gazebo Timbers: Use 80-grit or 100-grit. Softwood fibers will be much “fuzzier” than the Ipe after washing.
  3. Dust Removal: Use a leaf blower or a vacuum followed by a denatured alcohol or dry microfiber wipe-down to ensure no sawdust is trapped in the grain.

Phase 5: Finishing

  1. Gazebo (TWP): Apply “wet-on-wet.” Using a tile sponge and squirt bottle, apply the first coat, wait up to 20 minutes or before the first coat dries, and apply the second coat. Softwood will likely absorb much more product than the Ipe.
  2. Ipe (Penofin): Apply a thin coat. After 20-30 minutes, wipe the surface bone-dry with clean rags. Any Penofin left sitting on top of Ipe will turn into a sticky, black mess.

Safety Reminder: Dispose of oil-soaked rags by soaking them in a bucket of water or laying them flat on asphalt to dry. Never bunch them up, as they can spontaneously combust.

    • Apply neutralizer to railings, soak, rinse
    • Apply neutralizer to deck, soak, rinse
    • Apply neutralizer to gazebo framing and posts, soak, rinse
    • Rinse deck and railings
  • Day 5
    • Sand Ipe fascia wrapping deck support posts
    • Sand deck skirt fascia
    • Sand gazebo posts
  • Day 6
    • Sand gazebo framing
  • Day 7
    • Sand top of handrail
    • Sand inside of railing, pickets, and posts
  • Day 8
    • Sand outside of railing, pickets, and posts
    • Sand counter
  • Day 9
    • Sand inner faces of pickets
    • Sand deck
  • Day 10
    • Cover deck with tarps and cardboard
    • Apply TWP to gazebo roof framing (upper interior)
  • Day 11
    • Apply TWP to gazebo structural beams and posts
  • Day 12
    • Restring gazebo lights
    • Apply Penofin to under deck support posts and skirt fascia, wipe dry
    • Apply Penofin to outside railings, top of handrail and counter
  • Day 13
    • Apply Penofin to inside railings in sections, wipe dry
    • Clean metal flashing around edge of deck
  • Day 14
    • Restring railing lights
    • Apply Penofin to deck

Note from this 2026 session for next time:

  • Required 1 gallon of TWP and 1 gallon of Penofin
  • Spend more time prepping the lateral faces of the pickets
  • Before applying the deck oil, cover all 4 sides with blue plastic tarps to block sun and rain
  • Tile sponge is way better than a brush. Oil lays down faster, thinner, more consistent, and is easier to wipe off. Drying time is accelerated. Was able to walk on deck a day or two later.
  • Rug is a lightweight, breathable, plastic straw material which does not hold water against the wood like a thicker material would. Available on Amazon. Santex Outdoor/Indoor Plastic Straw Rug - Blue/Orange, 9x12 Feet
