Two weeks ago, our colleagues Pedro and Artur were at Fazenda do Jacarandás, a Mata Atlântica area in São Paulo, to launch a new ARR (short for Afforestation, Reforestation, and Restoration) project with Future Climate Group. The project will eventually expand to cover 1,100 hectares as part of the larger Rio Preto initiative. In this partnership, Future Climate contributes expertise in carbon project development and compliance. MORFO brings cutting-edge reforestation strategy and technology, including seed encapsulation, drone-based planting, and long-term monitoring.
The past few weeks have been incredibly busy, which prevented us from sending you a newsletter last month. But it was for a good reason, as we were focused on evaluating the results of one of our key projects in the Bahia region, nearly a year and a half after its launch.
The results are very promising. Forest restoration at scale in tropical areas is now a reality.
According to the IUCN Red List, 1 in 3 tree species is at risk of extinction (16,425 out of 47,282 assessed). Here are 4 reasons to stay hopeful despite this news.
Deforestation leads to significant energy generation losses. Researchers from the Climate Policy Initiative and PUC-Rio conducted a case study on the Teles Pires hydroelectric power plant, revealing that deforestation led to a significant monthly reduction in energy generation, ranging from 2.5% to 10%.

Brazil is the #1 country in the world for natural regeneration potential. A new study published in Nature by scientists from Australia, the USA, and the Mombak team revealed that one-fifth of all land suitable for natural regeneration is in the country. Most areas require human intervention at certain stages of forest growth.
Brazil has only 11 accredited laboratories—out of 188 nationwide—equipped to handle native seeds, with most located in the South and Southeast regions. This is one of the key findings of this comprehensive study.
Brazil’s National Carbon Market is now approved. New investments have already been announced and should soon follow up.

The Fundação Nacional dos Povos Indígenas (Funai) recently completed the first in-person module of the Indigenous Multipliers in Ecological Restoration (MIRE) training program in Rondônia, Brazil.
The Restoration and Reforestation Observatory has launched its Version 2.0. The number of restored hectares identified has doubled since the first version. The state of São Paulo ranks #1 in restored hectares.
