Growing up I was taught that slavery wasn’t that bad because most slaves were treated well and they were converted to Christianity. I was taught that womens only purpose was to be wives and mothers. Submit to a man, have as many kids as possible to “outbreed the left” and you’ll be happy! I was also taught people and dinosaurs lived at the same time and the earth is only 6000 years old. That curriculum is still around.
The Governors race in Illinois is currently going between JB Pritzker and the republican nominee Darren Bailey who is running on a platform that places education first but leads to a lot of questions.
Darren Bailey has not only supported school vouchers which defund public schools and reduce educational outcomes but also runs a Christian Nationalist School called Full Armor Christian Academy. Their curriculum teaches things like “most slaveholders treated their slaves well” that women in the workforce was bad for America and came at a “cost”, that “dinosaurs and humans lived at the same time” and that “Gay people have no more claims to special rights than child predators and rapists”.
Yikes.
So I interviews Governor Pritzker to address the claims of “Springfield isn’t teaching our kids real history” and what education thats well funded and built for everyone could look like.
