If you’re a mom who wants to build a business that gives you more flexibility, more freedom, and eventually replaces a full-time income (or even just earns enough to cover your groceries, mortgage, or family vacation), there is one hill I will absolutely die on.
Build your business on a website.
Not Instagram.
Not TikTok.
Not YouTube.
A website.
I know that probably isn’t the sexy answer.
It’s much more exciting to think about going viral or getting your first brand deal. But before you spend hours creating content for platforms you don’t own, I want you to build something that is yours.
Here’s why.
Imagine spending years building your dream home.
You paint every room. You landscape the yard. You make it beautiful.
Then one day the landowner knocks on the door and says, “We’re changing the rules. You have to leave.”
That’s exactly what you’re doing if your entire business lives on Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube.
Your followers aren’t actually your followers.
They’re Meta’s.
Or TikTok’s.
Or YouTube’s.
If your account gets hacked, suspended, or the algorithm suddenly decides your content isn’t worth showing to people anymore, you’ve built your entire business on land you don’t own.
I’ve seen it happen.
Creators lose accounts.
Reach disappears overnight.
Platforms change.
Businesses suffer.
Could you rebuild?
Probably.
Would it be stressful?
Absolutely.
That’s how I’ve always looked at it.
Social media is how people discover you.
Your website is where your business lives.
It’s where people can learn about you, where they can join your email list, where they can buy from you and where your content continues working long after you’ve posted it.
Most importantly, it’s something you control.
If you decide to change directions a year from now, your website changes with you.
If you decide to sell digital products instead of brand partnerships, your website changes with you.
If you become a local creator instead of a parenting creator, your website changes with you.
It grows as you grow.
Here’s another reason I’m so passionate about having your own website.
It makes you findable.
When someone Googles your name, your business, or a question you’ve answered, your website gives you a chance to show up.
But it’s not just about Google anymore.
We’re entering a world where more and more people are asking ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and other AI tools for recommendations instead of typing questions into a search engine. Those tools need somewhere to pull information from.
Every blog post you write...
Every resource you create...
Every page on your website...
...becomes part of your digital footprint.
Think of your website as leaving little breadcrumbs across the internet that help people discover you.
The more helpful content you publish over time, the easier it becomes for the right people to find you.
Your Instagram feed is great.
Your TikToks are great.
But they’re fleeting.
A well-written article on your website can bring people to your business for years.
That’s the kind of asset I want you building.
I’ve built websites for my own businesses and for clients over the years, and if a mom asks me where to start with a website, my answer is almost always Wix.
Not because it’s the fanciest platform.
Because it removes excuses.
You can literally start for free.
You don’t need to hire a web designer.
You don’t need to know code.
You don’t need to spend weeks staring at a blank screen wondering where to begin.
You can start with AI.
You can choose a template.
You can drag and drop.
You can have something online today.
That’s what matters.
Can I lovingly call some of you out?
I see so many moms spend weeks—sometimes months—trying to find the “perfect” domain name.
Or the perfect Instagram handle.
Or the perfect logo.
Meanwhile...
They haven’t actually started their business.
Sometimes perfectionism wears a disguise.
Sometimes it calls itself “research.”
Sometimes it calls itself “planning.”
Sometimes it calls itself “I’m still deciding on my brand name.”
But underneath all of that...
It’s procrastination.
Please don’t let a domain name stop you from building your future.
Use something simple. Use your name for now or something very neutral.
You can always change it later.
Momentum matters more than perfection.
One of my favorite things about Wix is that you don’t have to know exactly what your business will become.
Today, maybe it’s a simple landing page with your story and an email signup.
Six months from now, maybe you add a blog and start using affiliate links.
A few months later, maybe you launch a digital product.
Maybe you start booking local creator events.
Maybe you open a small online shop.
Maybe you offer services.
Your website grows with you instead of forcing you into one path.
That’s exactly how I think businesses should work.
Here’s what I’d do if I were starting over today.
I’d create a simple homepage on Wix.
I’d tell people who I help.
I’d explain how I help them.
I’d add one way to join my email list.
That’s it.
Not twenty pages.
Not a fancy logo.
Not an elaborate brand strategy.
Just a place on the internet that’s mine.
Because once you have that foundation, everything else gets easier.
Your Instagram has somewhere to send people.
Your TikTok has somewhere to send people.
Your Pinterest pins have somewhere to send people.
Your newsletters have somewhere to send people.
You’re no longer creating content that disappears into the algorithm.
You’re building an asset.
Here’s a quick video on how you can build a website for yourself so quickly using an AI prompt in Wix.
Over the past sixteen years, I’ve tested a lot of different business models.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this:
Build assets you own.
A website.
An email list.
Content that keeps working for you.
Those three assets have made me money while I was sleeping, on vacation, and spending time with my family.
These are the things that compound over time.
Social media is important.
I use it every day.
But I don’t build my business on social media.
I build my business around assets I control.
That’s the difference.
So if you’re wondering where to begin, my answer is simple.
Before you worry about followers...
Before you worry about going viral...
Before you worry about making the perfect Reel...
Build your home.
Everything else can grow from there.
P.S. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, remember this: your first website doesn’t need to be perfect. It just needs to exist. You can start with a free Wix site, create a simple landing page, and build from there. Your future business will thank you.
