Ever drink water all day and still feel like your skin looks dry, dull, or depleted? Molly and Emese break down why hydration and moisture aren’t the same thing — and why your skin needs both.

They get into the biggest end-of-summer skin stressors, from sun and travel to alcohol and air conditioning, plus the skincare ingredients, products, and everyday habits that can help restore hydration and support your skin barrier.

Plus: why the “eight glasses a day” rule isn’t one-size-fits-all, the truth about electrolytes and internal hydration, and Molly’s backstage-inspired new YISE Beauty product built to bridge the hydration-moisture gap in one step.

“Hydration is water content — the amount of water inside your skin cells. Moisture is oil content — the lipid barrier that seals that water in and keeps it from evaporating. Hydrated skin without a healthy moisture barrier is like filling a bucket with holes in it. Water comes in and water goes right back out.”

“The biggest takeaway in deep diving into all of this was how interconnected everything is. When we think of our skin, we think topically — and yes, that’s important. But a compromised gut lining can cause systemic inflammation that shows up in your skin as dull or dry. The gut, all of it, is a reflection on your skin. You can see it when someone looks haggard.”

“More does not mean better with retinol. Retinol can really mess up your barrier. I think it’s too much for the cell turnover. Women’s skin always seems a little bit angry. Start at a low percentage, two to three times a week — and if you’re gonna use retinol, you always have to follow up with SPF in the morning. It’s a very fine balance.”
