Of course, natural healing isn’t the problem—so, what is?

Listen to Episode #9

It’s early. I hear the crickets in the forest. I see the mist on the lake. I sit on this rain-wet porch in Maine. I hear; I see; I sit. I have to enter the writing this simply because my insides feel like a bed of squishy seaweed: Why, why, do I continue to put myself out there publicly? Someone is going to eat me. I don’t always feel that way, but today, yes. The house is mostly asleep. That helps. It also helps to remember sitting on a different porch a few weeks ago in Montana under a smoky sky with one of my blood sisters. (Not really, but remember when we did that in the 80’s?!) She had found resolve and was straight-talking me.

Possibility in the backyard this spring, husband and canoe at night in Maine, sparkling polar bear art at The Emerson in Bozeman.

“We’re going to have to learn to live with this,” she said referencing the heat, the smoke, the reality. Yes, I agreed and then she shared about GLP1s and peptides and the insidious layer of shaming happening when people are simply trying to make life more easy/tolerable to live in a world that is no longer your grandmother’s world. As in… good sleep, good food, good rest and good loving might not actually be enough, in part because they continue to be hard to come by in our modern world. The volume, pace, distraction, and disconnection of our everyday makes the good old basics of healing VERY hard to integrate. My friend is a seasoned mental health provider. She’s got chops and is one of the most seeing-through-the-bullshit, no-nonsense, ‘natural’ and loving people I know.

That is the subject of my latest solo podcast on The Modern Mammal.

I gave it a provocative title because I WANT YOU TO LISTEN. I want to hear what you feel and to light up or further this conversation for you and your friends. I am here for nuance, not absolutes! I am the OG natural woman—constitutionally and in my belief system—and have been sobered by the process of a surgery… humble blueberry pie to the max and a relaxing of my own efforting. Despite tracking it for years, I haven’t wanted to fully admit the mismatch—that it’s hard for natural healing to ‘take’ in a society that doesn’t bow down to the rhythms, cycles or wisdom of the natural world. Even if you do. Even if I do, which… I do.

I will continue to attempt to create the conditions. For myself and for others. Always. Always. Community. Slowness. Connection. Shared resources. Less tech noise. More space and time in and with the natural world. I believe we can shift our ‘reality’ and I believe humans aren’t yet adapted to this brand new biological era. Multiple truths. It helps to identify the reality of our conditions and then be gentle with ourselves about what can feel like an uphill attempt to simply feel okay.

Is this you? Have you tried all the things, or felt like your own healing (mental, physical and spiritual) is up to you and you are failing at it somehow. Is it up to you solely? Is it up to your community? Would it be easier or even natural in a more natural setting?

This episode is for you if:

  • You are alive in 2026.

  • You have any residual purity narrative with you (I know, I know, people don’t want to admit this, but dig deep).

  • You believe you (and others) “should” be able to do x, y, and z and why haven’t you had the gusto for it, or the capacity, or you wonder “What is wrong with me/others? Why can’t I/they …….?”

  • You are a female body navigating a hormonal threshold!!!!!

  • You are die-hard for or skeptical about natural healing.

  • You are triggered by this title.

People say “Don’t share from the messy middle”; others shush that and say it’s the only real place to share from. How about both? I often experience an internal percolation, a sitting with, a wondering when to share and with whom. Other times, the messiness wants to be revealed because it serves the subject matter and is an important part of the giving. This episode is the latter. You’ll notice that I whisper to you in the podcast. Two reasons. 1) Those were the conditions, recording late at night after tending to one of my daughters during my work day. 2) It’s telling of how I relate to the material. Can I say this? This feels true to me and yet the paradigm shift is new language for my voice. These words, are they mine? I can hear my own lack of enunciation in places and also my dead grandmother cringing about that. Sorry, Pat-Pat, at least I noticed!

Maine porch when I began to write and when I ended: a day changing.
