From Founder to Investor

There’s a kind of clarity that only comes after chaos.

Founders live in that chaos, where instinct matters more than pedigree, criticism comes with the job, and stability is always on the other side of reinvention. But for those of us who’ve survived the build, there’s another chapter waiting: one where we take everything we’ve learned and start writing checks of a different kind.

As I shared in conversation with my friend and partner Gwyneth Paltrow at the Carta Equity Summit 2021, the founder journey isn’t linear, it’s personal. It starts with an internal itch, a compulsion to build something that doesn’t yet exist. And if you’re wired for entrepreneurship, you know there’s no other way. No fallback plan. No version of success that doesn’t come with risk baked in.

But over time, you begin to realize that the most valuable capital you carry isn’t just financial. It’s the insight forged in failure. The pattern recognition that comes from trying and trying again. The empathy that only comes from surviving the early-stage fire. That’s what founders bring to the table when they become investors.

Criticism and backlash? They’re part of the job. Founders move culture forward and sometimes that makes people uncomfortable. One of the most powerful moments in our conversation was when Gwyneth talked about how backlash only really hurts when it reflects something unresolved within you. That hit home. Because as founders, we grow by confronting what’s hard, then choosing to keep going anyway.

Today, as a co-founder and managing partner at Kinship Ventures, I believe deeply in closing the founder–investor gap. I’ve been on both sides of the table, and I’ve seen what happens when you add real operator energy to a cap table. It changes the conversation. It brings context, not just capital. It unlocks trust, speed, and a deeper kind of accountability.

Our thesis at Kinship is simple:

Our approach is grounded in a simple belief: the future of entrepreneurship and investment will be shaped by founders who’ve lived the process themselves, operators who understand what it takes to build, scale, and lead.

At Kinship, we invest early and stay close. We work with founders who are redefining how people live, work, and care for themselves, and we support them through every stage of growth.

We combine experience with access, structure with instinct, and conviction with patience. Our goal isn’t just to back profitable companies, but to help build ones that create lasting cultural and behavioral change.
