The Modern Mind Has Too Much Access and Too Little Authority

There is something strange about the life we are living now, because never before has the ordinary person been able to reach so much, know so much, watch so much, compare so much, desire so much, and enter so many worlds without ever leaving the room, yet somehow the mind does not feel more powerful because of it, it often feels more scattered, more tired, more easily moved, and less able to stay with one thing long enough to feel whole.

You can wake up and reach for your phone before you have even remembered your own life, and within seconds you can enter the fears of the world, the success of strangers, the problems of people you barely know, the opinions of people you do not respect, the anger of a headline, the beauty of someone else’s morning, the urgency of a message, the pressure of a task, and the quiet shame of comparison, all before your own mind has had one honest moment to stand still.

This is the modern condition.

Everything has access.

Very little has permission.

And yet, because the access is so smooth, so familiar, so ordinary, most people do not notice that their inner life has become a public room where almost anything can enter.

A thought enters.

A notification enters.

A fear enters.

A desire enters.

A memory enters.

A stranger’s opinion enters.

A comparison enters.

A small piece of bad news enters.

And the mind, instead of standing at the door with authority, simply receives it all and then wonders why it feels heavy before the day has even begun.
