There are parts of life we defend long after they stop feeling good.
We defend the job because it is stable.
We defend the relationship because it has history.
We defend the routine because it keeps things predictable.
We defend the version of ourselves that everyone knows because changing would create questions we do not yet know how to answer.
And because these defenses sound reasonable, we rarely notice how much energy they consume.
You tell yourself that things are not that bad.
You remind yourself of what could go wrong if you changed anything.
You compare your situation to people who have it worse.
You explain why now is not the right time.
You say that maybe you are just tired, maybe you are expecting too much, maybe you should be more grateful, maybe the answer is to become stronger instead of becoming more honest.
This is how a draining life can remain protected for years.
Not because it is good.
Because it is familiar.
