PULSE BY MODERNTAX April 22, 2026

WE SHIP IN DAYS WHAT USED TO TAKE WEEKS

That’s not a positioning line. It’s how we run the company.

In the past 24 hours, we cleared the last ERROR-level finding from our SOC 2 audit review for our largest deal ever, with several others in the pipeline; we shipped automated 8821 sends; and launched structured trial onboarding. Here’s what that actually means for the lenders and platforms using ModernTax — and what we’re building toward.

SOC 2 READINESS: 34 FINDINGS → 0

We’ve been working toward SOC 2 Type 1 certification, with a Q2 target date. This week, we hit the milestone that matters most.

Our security team worked through 34 ERROR-level findings — the class of issues that would block a SOC 2 audit:

  • Row-level security is enabled on all 23 database tables touching PII or credential data

  • All privileged database views were converted to security_invoker, eliminating a class of privilege escalation risk

  • 90-day audit of IRS transcript access completed and documented — clean, no unauthorized exports

  • SOC 2 Type 1 Readiness Report finalized with gap register

Today: 0 ERROR-level findings. Remaining items are all WARN tier.

For SBA lenders and fintech platforms evaluating ModernTax: this matters. You are authorizing us to retrieve IRS records on behalf of your borrowers. Our security posture needs to match that responsibility. We think it does.

WHAT ELSE WAS SHIPPED THIS WEEK

8821 SEND AUTOMATION (ANNUAL SUBSCRIBERS)

The most friction-heavy part of the transcript workflow isn’t ordering — it’s the wet signature.

For 504 lenders, of which we now work with 3 of the top 10 in the US, Form 8821 has historically been the one document that can’t be filed electronically. It becomes a trailing item. It holds up closings. And if the signature doesn’t pass IRS scrutiny, you find out after the fact.

ModernTax annual subscribers now get end-to-end 8821 handling: we collect the signature with identity verification that meets IRS online submission standards, parse signer information from email intake automatically, and trigger all pending sends from a single dashboard button with a live count and two-step confirm. This saves processing teams hours, if not days, per year when you classify it across hundreds of SBA loans.

If you’re currently running 8821s through a Ventures workflow — we support that. We just converted a Ventures-based CDC from one of our competitors and replicated their ordering workflow within our platform.

Annual subscription also includes onboarding for your full team, 24/7 email and phone support, and proactive escalation when a borrower swears they filed but IRS shows no record. Book a time here for a full demo.

TRIAL ONBOARDING

New trial users now get a structured 4-step welcome sequence. Step one explains the IRS 8821 and CAF number in plain English — because that is the question we answer most on new accounts. The sequence stops automatically the moment a user submits their first request.

TAX PAYMENT VERIFICATION (reminder)

Launched last month. You can now pull IRS account transcripts — not just return transcripts — to verify payment history, outstanding balances, and installment agreements.

A borrower can file a clean 1040 and still carry a $40,000 IRS payment plan. That is a materially different credit risk. Tax payment verification closes that gap.

Full use case

WHERE WE’RE TAKING MODERNTAX

ModernTax started as a transcript retrieval tool. What we’re building toward is something different.

We’re building the ordering and intelligence layer for tax processors, credit teams, and underwriters. The platform where a lender can go from “I need to verify this borrower” to “I have everything I need to decide” — without touching a legacy IRS portal or waiting three weeks.

The immediate value is speed. Same or next business day, versus the 2-4 week industry standard.

The next unlock is agentic. We’re working toward chat and workflow automation across the data that lives in ModernTax and beyond — so a credit analyst can ask a natural-language question about a borrower’s tax history and get a structured answer, not a PDF stack.

That’s what we’re building.

REGULATORY PULSE

SBA KILLED THE SBSS SCORE. NOW LENDERS HAVE TO UNDERWRITE.

Effective March 1, under SOP 50 10 8, federally regulated SBA lenders can no longer use the FICO Small Business Scoring Service to screen 7(a) small loans (under $350,000).

For years, a single score could move a loan through. That’s over.

Under the new rules, lenders must apply the same commercial credit analysis they use for non-SBA loans of similar size:

  • Full debt service coverage analysis (DSCR must be ≥1.1:1)

  • Two months of commercial bank statements in the file

  • Projected earnings where applicable

  • Documented credit rationale with every E-Tran submission

What this means for transcript workflows: tax data matters more now, not less. A DSCR built on borrower-provided financials that don’t reconcile with IRS records is a compliance exposure. Verify before you close.

MARCH 1 CITIZENSHIP CHANGE

100% of direct and indirect ownership in an SBA applicant must now be U.S. citizens or nationals. Lawful permanent residents are no longer eligible. This requires deeper ownership verification on every application.
