| Modern Samurai
In this series, we’ll walk through the process of creating a safe, isolated and functional ethical hacking and security operations center (SOC) lab using VirtualBox and a carefully selected set of virtual machines (VMs). Whether you’re a cybersecurity enthusiast, a penetration tester or an IT professional looking to sharpen your skills, this lab will provide a realistic environment to practice ethical hacking, vulnerability assessment, threat intelligence and defensive security techniques.
Controlled Environment
Ethical hacking requires a controlled environment where you can experiment with attacks, defenses and security tools without affecting real-world systems. This lab replicates a realistic network with:
- Legacy and modern operating systems (Windows XP to Windows 10, Server 2003 to 2016)
- Vulnerable machines (Metasploitable 2, OWASP Broken Web Apps)
- Security monitoring tools (Security Onion, MISP)
- Vulnerability scanners (Greenbone Vulnerability Manager)
- Network security appliances (pfSense firewall)
By the end of this series, you’ll have a fully functional, self-contained lab where you can:
- Perform penetration testing exercises
- Analyze malware safely
- Test exploit techniques
- Monitor network traffic and detect intrusions
- Assess vulnerabilities in web applications and servers
The Fun Stuff
Each article in this series will add to your arsenal:
- Lab Design & Network Architecture: How to structure your virtual network for maximum realism.
- Virtual Machine Setup: Step-by-step installation and configuration of each VM.
- Network Configuration: Isolating the lab, setting up NAT, internal networks and firewalls.
- Security Tools Installation: Deploying MISP, Security Onion and Greenbone Vulnerability Manager.
- Hands-On Exercises: Practical scenarios like exploiting Metasploitable 2, attacking OWASP BWA and defending against attacks.
- Monitoring & Logging: Using Security Onion to detect and analyze intrusions.
- Defensive Security: Hardening systems, configuring pfSense and implementing IDS/IPS.
Prerequisites
To follow along, you’ll need:
- A modern computer (8GB RAM minimum, 16GB for more comfort, 32GB or more for running many VMs simultaneously, notably helpful when running more than one Microsoft VM or Security Onion)
- VirtualBox (recent or latest version)
- ISO files for each OS (downloadable from their respective websites)
- Basic Linux command-line knowledge (helpful but not required)
Important Ethical & Lawful Notes
Before you begin, understand that:
- This lab is for educational purposes only.
- Never test systems you don’t own or have explicit permission to assess.
- Keep the lab isolated from the internet to prevent accidental exposure.
