Last weekend, my husband and I found ourselves in an absurd debate over our morning coffee: analyzing a video of a bear approaching a baby in a backyard, until, in the final seconds, the family cat leapt in to save the day.
“That can’t be real,” I said.
“Why not?” he countered. “Cats are territorial. The movements look natural.”
“But the timing is too perfect. And look at the shadows...”
“I don’t know. Animals do incredible things.”
We went back and forth for at least ten minutes. We zoomed in on the fur texture. We debated lighting angles as if we were cinematographers. My husband even pulled up a website about bear behavior.
For a cat video.
We never reached a conclusion.
What shocked us was not just our inability to tell. It was the sudden, uncomfortable realization: if we cannot differentiate reality from AI fabrication in a video, how are we supposed to guide our children?
How do we teach them to be critical consumers of media when we are just as lost as they are?
On September 30, 2025, OpenAI launched Sora 2, a tool capable of generating realistic videos complete with speech and sound in seconds. The app launched as a social media platform with a feature that lets users insert anyone’s face into AI-generated scenes.
Within 48 hours, the platform was flooded. Children’s characters appeared in violent parodies. Cartoon mascots promoted cryptocurrency scams. Deceased celebrities were resurrected to endorse products they never touched.
The app soared to number one in the App Store.
Perhaps no moment captured the human cost of this technology more powerfully than Zelda Williams’ plea to the internet.
Zelda Williams, daughter of the late actor Robin Williams, posted on her Instagram:
“Please, just stop sending me AI videos of Dad. Stop believing I wanna see it or that I’ll understand. I don’t and I won’t”.
She continued:
“If you’ve got any decency, just stop doing this to him and to me, to everyone even, full stop. It’s dumb, it’s a waste of time and energy, and believe me, it’s NOT what he’d want.”
Her words cut through the noise. This is not about copyright law or Silicon Valley ethics panels. It is about a daughter forced to watch her father’s memory manipulated for clicks.
Recent research from iProov, which tested 2,000 UK and US consumers, reveals a an alarming truth: only 0.1% of people can accurately distinguish real from fake content across all stimuli when tested on AI-generated images and videos.
Read that again. Not 10%. Not even 1%. Just 0.1%. Meaning 999 out of 1,000 people fail to consistently identify deepfakes.
The study found that participants were 36% less likely to correctly identify a synthetic video compared to a synthetic image. This matters enormously because video carries psychological weight that images do not. We instinctively trust moving, speaking content more than static images.
Even more concerning is that people remained overly confident in their deepfake detection skills at over 60%, regardless of whether their answers were correct, with this false confidence particularly pronounced in young adults aged 18-34.
Your teenagers think they can spot the fakes. They cannot. And perhaps neither can you.
Which brings us to the hardest question: What does parenting even look like when we are just as lost as our teens?
For years, we have operated on a simple model: control the inputs, protect the child. Limit screen time. Install filters. Monitor app usage. Check browser history. The assumption was straightforward: if you could control access, you could control exposure to harm.
That model just shattered.
You cannot filter out AI-generated content the way you could block harmful websites or inappropriate apps. There is no parental control setting for “synthetic media.” AI-generated videos and images appear on mainstream platforms your tees already use. They are shared by accounts your kids follow, forwarded by friends who have no idea what they are passing along, embedded in content that looks legitimate.
The traditional parenting role around technology, the “screen time police” who monitors hours and filters content, is no longer sufficient. You cannot block AI; it is everywhere. You can only prepare them for it.
This means evolving from gatekeeper to guide, from limiting exposure to building discernment. The question is no longer “How do I keep my child away from this?” It is “How do I help my child think clearly when surrounded by it?”
Here is the uncomfortable truth:
We are asking a generation that was essentially trained to be digitally dependent to now teach their children digital wisdom they are still learning themselves.
This is genuinely unprecedented. Most parenting challenges involve passing down established knowledge. Your parents taught you to look both ways before crossing the street because they already knew how. But with AI tools that are fundamentally reshaping cognition, parents and children are learning to navigate these technologies almost simultaneously.
You do not have all the answers because nobody does. Sora 2 launched two weeks ago. You are not behind. You are right on time, figuring this out in real-time alongside everyone else.
This actually creates an opportunity: Your children do not need you to be the expert. They need you to model becoming more intentional with technology.
Children watching parents openly develop their own discipline and awareness around AI might actually be more powerful than instructions from parents who claim to have it all figured out. When you say “I am also learning when AI helps versus hurts my thinking,” you are modeling the exact self-awareness we want kids to develop.
The new parent-child conversation is not about setting time limits; it is about navigating an unstable reality together.
The shift from certainty to skepticism requires us to fundamentally rethink how we consume information. Here is what that might look like in practice:
Stop trying to train your teens to spot fakes. The technology has already outpaced human perception. Instead, teach them to ask better questions:
Who benefits if I believe this?
What emotion is this trying to make me feel?
Can I find this information anywhere else?
Does the timing seem designed to provoke?
Our brains evolved to process information quickly and move on. AI-generated content exploits this by making fabrications feel instantly believable. The antidote is deliberate slowness.
Try this family practice: Once a day, pick something you saw online that made you feel something strongly. Anger, joy, outrage, hope. Then pause for sixty seconds before sharing, commenting, or accepting it as true.
Sixty seconds. That’s it. You would be shocked how often that pause reveals manipulation you missed in the heat of the moment.
My friends started doing what they call “Sunday Skepticism.” Once a week at dinner, everyone brings one thing they saw online that week that seemed unbelievable. They investigate together. No judgment, just curiosity.
Last week, their teenager brought a video claiming a particular celebrity died. Fifteen seconds of searching revealed it was false. But the conversation that followed mattered more than the fact-check. They talked about why someone would create that. Who benefits. What emotions it triggered. How quickly it spread.
I thought it is brilliant!
Before believing any significant claim, especially about politics, health, or breaking news, require three independent, credible sources. Not three websites repeating the same viral claim. Three original sources with their own reporting.
This is harder than it sounds. It requires effort. That’s the point.
In an age when fabrication is effortless, verification must become habitual.
When you encounter AI-generated content designed to mislead, talk through the manipulation techniques with your teens:
“See how this video uses scary music to make you feel afraid before showing you any facts?”
“Notice how this doesn’t cite where the information came from?”
“This is designed to make you angry so you will share it before thinking.”
Naming the tactics removes their power. Kids start recognizing patterns. They become harder to manipulate.
Ages 5-8: “Sometimes computers can make pictures and videos that look real but aren’t. Kind of like the special effects in movies, but it is getting so good that even grown-ups have trouble telling what is real. That’s why we always want to double-check important things together. If you see something that seems weird or confusing, come tell me and we will figure it out.”
Ages 9-12: “Have you heard about AI making fake videos? There are now programs that can make really realistic videos of anyone saying anything. Even things they never actually said. Let’s talk about how to tell what is real and what is not. What have you seen that made you wonder? Let’s talk about how we can figure these things out together.”
Ages 13-18: “You have probably heard about Sora 2 and the controversy with AI-generated videos. Zelda Williams had to tell people to stop sending her AI videos of her deceased father. What do you think about that? How would you feel if someone did that to our family? Beyond the emotional impact, there is also research showing that relying too much on AI might actually change how our brains work. What concerns you most about all this? What do you think we should do about it?”
These conversations are not one-time events. They are ongoing dialogues that evolve as your child develops and the technology advances. The goal is to build trust so your child comes to you when they encounter something confusing, disturbing, or manipulative. Not to scare them, but to equip them.
We are experiencing a fundamental shift in how we verify truth.
For most of modern history, visual and audio evidence carried special weight. A video of something happening was proof it happened. A recording captured what was said. These weren’t perfect (yes, we’ve had photo manipulation, staged scenes, and doctored footage) but the technical skill and resources required to create convincing fakes kept them relatively rare.
That barrier is gone now. The technology to create convincing synthetic media is accessible, fast, and improving rapidly.
I think we have not yet reckoned with what this means.
The generation we are raising will be the first to come of age in a world where synthetic media is indistinguishable from reality.
They will navigate a landscape we can probably not comprehend.
They will develop new literacies we have not imagined yet.
Here’s what’s different this time: parents and children are learning to navigate a technology that fundamentally destabilizes reality itself. Not just how we access information, but whether we can trust our own eyes and ears. Your children are not entering this alone. They have parents who recognize the stakes, who admit uncertainty, and who are committed to figuring this out alongside them.
That shared journey may be exactly what this moment requires.
