Instead of instagram

This is a post following up a story I posted on Instagram volunteering to help anyone interested to get off Instagram and onto something more open, with the hopes we could get a little crew together to seed a small network that could be fun enough to keep using. Because of a) everything and b) Meta’s recent rollback of moderation and/or attempt to cut its workforce in the shittiest way possible ,…

Lucy's eggs

Lucy wrote about a Real Mind Thing of hers, The Eggs , for a very cool project called the Personal Canons Cookbook. This is such a lovely tale of friendship, more-than-friendship, shared meals, invented meals, and cohabitation in the most two-small-bears-in-a-den sort of way. Do read Lucy’s tale. She says you can get the original recipe here .

Patterns of intention

Walking up to Martha ’s recent art show at Mother Foucault’s , I saw Patterns of Intention in the window. They’re distressingly good at putting books I want in the window – I think 90% of the books I’ve bought there have come from the window. Or maybe I’m just a lazy browser and need to literally see it from the street to pay attention. At the moment, I’m still trying to figure out why and where…

Guidebook to the viridian maw

The first in a series of self-published zines meant to stoke the imaginations of tabletop role players, Forking Paths #1: Guidebook to the Viridian Maw has given me and my friends literally hundreds of hours of engaged, high-fantasy imagination time. Each issue in the series describes an original imaginary land with detailed descriptions of its history, features, and creatures, but loosely enough…

The Conceptual Labor Book

This is the Conceptual Labor book that I wrote.

Stone souping

When multiple people are interested in a project or an idea or an activity, and no one has a plan or has actually taken action, but in talking to each other they end up with a plan accidentally. The most common way for this to work is to assume the other person has it more together than you do and lean on their imagined plan to consolidate yours. This is the opposite of brain crack .

The mole diagram

Back in art school, I had a dream where I was trying to explain to my friend Greg a tension I was feeling with my studies. I went to art school to focus on being a painter, but once I got there I also joined a martial arts school, started my if-you’re-going-to-get-a-degree-in-painting-you-have-to-learn-how-to-code bargain with myself, and was still writing all the time. I was supposed to be…

About

MMMX. , pronounced “mem ex dot cloud” is my semi-public memex . It includes things I think are worth remembering, brain mulch, mind things, collections, and various notes. I try to put things on here that would be interesting to other people, but no promises. 💙 Ním Browse There are a few types of things on here: Galleries , which are collections of media Media , which are descriptive pages for a…

Colophon

Built in Jekyll . Using Fomantic-UI for most layout, and an adapted version of blocks.css for the blocky stuff. Using the backlinks generator and note graph generator scripts from the Digital Garden Template Jekyll theme. Custom plugins: make-galleries to convert directories of assets into notes, collected in a gallery page make-index to generate a json file of all documents and their metadata,…

What i want to store in my memex

Brain Mulch and Mind Things If only to be less confusing when I ramble about digital gardens and memexes and so on to Martha , I’ve been trying to figure out a clear difference between the two ideas, or at least how I’m approaching them. Digital Gardening seems more geared towards Brain Mulch – notes about stuff, bookmarks or saved thoughts or links, encouraged to build up, ferment, and grow into…

What is a memex

“Memex” is a portmanteau of “memory” and “index,” coined by Vannevar Bush in his essay As We May Think. It was an idea far ahead of its time for a system “ that would permit a researcher to follow and annotate topics of interest, analogous to later hypertext technologies.” It sounds like a personal database, but it was supposed to be more than that – an extension of an individual’s memory and…

Níms Webring

This is the home page for my webring. It uses Octothorpe Protocol to connect all my different sites. The following sites are in it: My paintings Lets Talk About Paintings The Idea Store

Buckmanite

Buckmanite, or Buckman Slate, is a metamorphic substance endemic to many urban environments, but first identified in the Buckman neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. It is a composite material formed when plastic municipal containers undergo rapid exothermic reactions, deforming to bond with the surrounding environment. These reactions are most often triggered by human intervention, both accidental…

Dorians

In January of 2024 I had a dream in which my dear friend Gina was known to always be carrying, and snacking from, a basket of Dorians. Dorians, as everyone in the world of the dream already knew, were a beloved European cookie, as reknowned and revered as the Madelines and Financiers of our world. Now, before I describe them, I have to admit that I have been talking about them with Martha and our…

Magic masala chips

My dear and amazing friend [[ Vee ]] sent me a wadded-up, 1/3-full bag of Magic Masala flavor Lays. We have an ongoing chip and snack discourse. I once sent them a single chip and single animal cracker in a custom made cardboard sleeve. They also were responsible for the Chip Bar at my wedding. Apparently the experience of eating these chips was too intense to keep to themselves, and before the…

Quilt by delphine

[[ Delphine ]] makes excellent clothing, including conversational sweaters . She gave us this beautiful quilt, made with offcuts from many of her clothings, for our wedding. It was quite a surprise and one of our favorite presents. We were told that there was one patch that was JNCOs and tried very hard to find it but eventually had to ask for the answer. It was this one – the stipe of denim in…

Sam zell's weird art

8.17.23 I was visiting Michigan, and a buddy of mine (who shall remain anonymous for this story) has been working for the University of Michigan in a capacity that overlaps with the Natural History Museum. Until recently, that museum was housed in a building that I and many, many Michigan natives loved dearly as kids. It was a small but stately museum, big to a kid and cozy to an adult, with a lot…

Slice of life mug

Martha got this for me at Memory Den for Christmas. I really don’t know how to describe it. It’s the size of our smaller cat.

Stirrup cup

I got this at Tip Top Vintage. It’s what’s known as a “ stirrup cup .” The base is an iron elephant head and the rest is black glass, making it really quite heavy. It’s great for drinking scotch whisky and plotting the overthrow of nations.

Synthesizers

Abe made this dope thing recently: I want a Striso 2023 Update: I have a Striso

The remote

My friend Jayne’s dad gave her, unsolicited, a set of three remote-operated outlets when she was living in a studio apartment where it might have been possible to reach all of her light switches at once. Solid Dad move. She gave them to me to use in my chaotic art studio, which was very appreciated. However, out of the box the range was about 6 feet, which made these about as useful as a long…

The side table

My dad made this! It’s a copy of a table that I found at a garage sale, but in this case the copy is way better than the original, which was plywood and also broken. I have a feeling that it was designed as smoker’s furniture, but it’s pretty good writer’s furniture. Fits notebooks and one pencil quite well. I added the felt top, which is regular walnut on the reverse.

Thinkpad x220 aka screb

I’m typing this in 2024 on a 2011 Lenovo Thinkpad x220 named Screb, and it’s pretty fun. I have it because of an x200 I got to use on a long trip on the Siberian Express that my sister took me on in 2013. My first laptop ever was a cheap-and-old-even-at-the-time Thinkpad that I got in 2000 mainly so I could write whatever it was that I was writing at the age of 20 on my lunchbreak at work…

Turd lake beer

This was an amazing Rice Lager that Andrea made. I think it was accidentally a steam beer, which are usually ales, but this was a lager somehow. It brewed at a very high temperature in her gazebo and turned out great. It’s not really called Turd Lake, but she sent me a picture of the logo, which is a grain of rice, and I said it looked like a lake seen from above and she was like “phew, Chris said…

Aaron

Aaron is our wonderful friend and neighbor. He has two cats, Saucepan and Shoyu, was in Nurses and now makes music as S.E.C.R.E.T.S.

Abe Ingle

Abe loves fun and had a bad cat named Baxter. Now he has two bad kitties, Loki and Wick. He makes cool Synthesizers .

Andrea

Andrea is our wonderful friend and neighbor. She has two cats, Saucepan and Shoyu, and made Turd Lake Beer and is part of S.E.C.R.E.T.S.

Caitlyn

Caitlyn is awesome. We met because of Call in the Night + much synchronicity. They play a bodybuilding tiefling named Theodora Spawn, and has this tattoo. If you know, you know.

Case

(Cl)Amber does a looot of cool things. One of them was to make a cool book about a road trip we took.

Chris herdt

Chris does many things, including biking around Minneosta, internet security, running Osric , and is the patron saint of pointless projects, for which I shall always venerate him. Chris has taught me many things over the years, as he’s been putting up with me since I was 14. Crucial things include: you can just run your own zine you can also just invent a fake Chzech artist to sign linocuts you…

Evan

Follow Evan’s pursuits at his digital garden . He’s in the top right of this picture I drew of us goodboiz .

Jane zemel

Jane is responsible for more colorful fabric in my life than anyone besides Martha . I own a set of hand-painted plates she made and I’m writing that down here so I remember to put them up and post them here.

John James

John James made this bench look hella better He’s in the bottom left corner of this drawing I made of us goodboiz . He printed the covers for [[ ../books/The Conceptual Labor Book|my book ]] .

Mumonkan

Invented the term “hypolink” did this wtf will help you identify a whale or zebras or some big cats and african wild dogs or giraffes https://twitter.com/TweetABruce/status/1126902684479569922

Lucy

Lucy is well-known as a natural force of positive energy. We sat next to each other at a button-making workshop at XOXO, talked about iPad screen protectors, and then later she friggin looked up conceptual labor from my actual paper business card, read it, and mentioned it on her blog! That’s someone who does their research! We’ve been friends ever since our first breathless mindmeld about the…

💖Martha💖

get lost in her garden subscribe to her excellent newsletter! Here she is at Mother Foucault’s

Nik Wise

Nik made a garden at the same time I started getting into this. He’s been doing a lot of writing about work, sometimes citing The Conceptual Labor Book ! He and his cat are in the bottom right corner of this drawing I made of us goodboiz .

Ryan Gantz

Ryan is as nice as he is tall, which is “very!” He works with Nik Wise and this garden sprouted from a seed that fell from his tweet.

Spencer Chang

Spencer is a real nice guy who reached out to me on Twitter after I made bloggy.garden/ . (His feed is the 🌀.) He’s doing super cool stuff in the cozyweb realm like htmlgarden and more! Inspired by Case sending me linkdumps after our conversations, I made this note to capture the links I sent or thought of during our inspiring convesation. (In a perfect world, the backlink to Clamber would send…

Dawn treader books

Dawn Treader is a bookstore in Ann Arbor, founded in 1976. [[ Corby ]] ran it for years and always let me work there when I ended up back in Ann Arbor for some dumb reason or another as a 20-something. After he passed away, Africa Schuamann, who had been manager for a while, really took over and eventually bought the place . She’s really done right by the place, including replacing the awful…

Mother foucault's

Mother Foucault’s is a bookstore in the dirty southeast of Portland Oregon run by Craig. Here’s a picture of him at work:

Worker's tap

The Worker’s Tap is basically our extra living room. It’s a worker-owned anarchist socialist lefty everything bar run by and frequented by the nicest people. We’ve played DnD there about a million times. They let me have my birthday there, and when [[ Mykle ]] and Jon and I got stuck in the middle of the World Naked Bike Ride by Michael’s Italian Beef*, they let me come in and order a beer as long…

The Record Tree

In May of 2021, we moved to a new neighborhood on the north side of Ann Arbor. Around the corner from our apartment lives a magical tree – the Record Tree. In the warmer months, you are sure to find a pile of records, springing up from its roots like toadstools. Sounds of the Record Tree: Vol 1 This is the first mixtape I have made to highlight the gems that reward those who will dig through the…
