This a small landscape from my second trip to Meyreuil Village in the summer of 1990.
When I was a grad student at Parsons MFA Painting program in 1988-1990, I had a hunch after my first year that I should go away and paint on my own. This impulse to leave NYC came from the random viewing of a photograph of a landscape and vineyard somewhere in Europe, a bird’s eye view of strong patterns that were unfamiliar to me. Without the benefit of the internet I asked around and somehow came up with a plan to visit Sweden and the museums in Scandinavia and then head south through Cologne and Paris on my way to Provence. In other posts I’ve written the details of how I found Meyreuil. I am here again visiting my dear friend, Marie-France, and walking around inside of my memories and the various locations where I set up my easel and struggled day after day in solitude trying to understand color.
If you’ve been reading this substack for a few years you know that there was a museum exhibit of these Meyreuil paintings in 2024 in Cap D’Ail, France at Musee Villa Les Camelias. (Donald Kuspit wrote a terrific review of the exhibit.)
My paints and an old easel are always in Meyreuil and I can paint an hour after arriving. I usually feel a strong urge to work on a painting I’ve left there in storage or start a new one. I have the luxury of being able to work there and not worry about if a painting is too wet to travel. There’s no pressure to finish anything, just appetite to work and look after so many years of frustration and difficult times.
I lived in Meyreuil on very little and I wasn’t connected to a school or host family. Despite Meyreuil’s proximity to Aix, I was very isolated the first few months. There was just painting, running, reading books, buying groceries, writing letters and cooking dinner. Can you imagine in the world of cell phones, internet, AI and Social Media, what a special experience it was?
I made this painting yesterday after a run. I set up on Marie’s porch with the St. Victoire at my back. This is a house I’ve been drawing and painting since the second Meyreuil trip in 1990. I’ve never approached it this, very consciously making it at large and formal as possible in the rectangle.
I’ll be showing some new paintings in Menlo Park in two weeks and in September at Truro Center for the Arts on Cape Cod.
Here are several photos of Meyreuil that explain Meyreuil’s perspective of Cezanne’s mountain, a perspective quite different from the views near Aix.
You can see my paintings in current issues of Vogue, The New York Times Magazine, recent New Yorkers, in London in TLS and in all 2026 issues of WSJ Magazine.
