The smile is the weapon. Not the words.
The words on their own are nothing much. You could handle the words. It’s the smile wrapped around them, the little laugh at the end, the “I’m only teasing” that turns the whole thing into a trap. Because now if you say anything, you’re the one who ruined the mood. And if you say nothing, it just sits inside you and rots.
They built you a room with two doors, and both of them lead somewhere you don’t want to go.
There’s a third door. They don’t know about it.
There were nine of us at the table. Nice night. Good food. Everyone in a good mood.
And they turned to me, in front of everyone, and said something about my work. Something small. Something that sounded almost like a compliment if you weren’t listening properly. Something like, “It’s amazing, honestly, that you make that work. Most people couldn’t get away with it.”
And they smiled. Big, warm smile. And a couple of people laughed, because it sounded like a joke, and I laughed too.
I laughed. That’s the bit that still gets me.
I sat there with my face hot and my ears ringing and I laughed along with everybody else, and then I picked up my fork and ate my dinner and said nothing for about ten minutes while the conversation moved on and everybody forgot about it.
Everybody except me.
I went to the bathroom about twenty minutes later and stood in front of the mirror with my hands on the sink, doing what everyone does. Running it back. Coming up with the perfect thing I should have said. It was such a good line, too. It came to me at 11:47pm in a bathroom, which is exactly four hours too late to be useful to anyone.
I’ve replayed that dinner more times than I’d like to admit. Not because it was the worst thing anyone’s ever said to me. It wasn’t even close.
Because I laughed. Because I helped them.
And I promised myself I’d never do it again. So I found the thing you actually say, and it turns out it’s not a comeback at all. It’s a question, and it’s four words long, and it’s completely ruthless.
Here it is, exactly how to say it, and exactly what to do when they wriggle.
You have to understand the trick before you can beat it.
