Milli Hill · WHAT ABOUT WOMEN

Good morning all and here is this week’s nosebag, my round-up of everything I’ve been thinking, reading and writing about over the past seven days.

It’s been a truly exciting time because my latest book, The Body Myth, came out on Thursday, and this afternoon it’s the Preorder Party at 4pm! If you’ve preordered and emailed me the receipt, you should have received the link to today’s party - if you haven’t, then please get in touch asap. And I’ll see you there for a great chat and of course, PRIZES!

PS if you want to order a copy TODAY and email the receipt (millihillwriter@gmail.com) then I’ll still let you in, because I’m nice like that! You can get a copy in hardback, ebook or kindle from where ever you usually like to buy your books.

By coincidence, directly after the party there’s also a chance to join From My Room, a free 1 hour online event hosted by Victory Afghanistan, where four young Afghan women share their own stories, live from their bedrooms. You’ll hear about resilience, hope, education, family life, and what it means to build a future when so many opportunities have been taken away. Following the personal stories, you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions directly to the students during an open live discussion.

I believe there are only a handful of tickets left, it’s free but you have to book for security reasons.

So far no Amazon reviews have appeared for The Body Myth, but if you’ve got a copy and read it, please do consider leaving one? Reviews are so helpful to give a new book momentum.

There has been one absolutely ringing endorsement, though, from Lucy Mangan, who wrote:

Last week I mentioned that I had started reading The Body Myth by Milli Hill and said that “at this early stage it seems to be something like The Beauty Myth for women my age and I mean this as high praise.” Well, I have continued reading it to the end and in short – can confirm. Like Naomi Wolf’s seminal (we have GOT to think of a better word for use in these situations) 1990 bestseller, it’s impassioned but clear, concise and endlessly readable and puts into words loads of things you kinda vaguely thought or felt or wondered about and gives you, at last, a grip on them.

I also had a great endorsement from the author Katja Kaine whose book Blood of Gods and Girls also came out this month and is perfect for your feminist teens.

Enlightening. Enraging. Empowering. I wish I’d read The Body Myth in my twenties. I would have lived my life differently.

And menstrual health expert Claire Baker

Every few years, a book is published that names something significant in the cyclical living, female empowerment, menstrual awareness space. Every time it happens it changes something, it shifts something, it gives us language for our experience. You might treasure a few of these books yourself. Milli Hill’s The Body Myth: Reclaiming the Powerful Truth About Being Female, released this week, will be, for me, one of those books.

Thank you to everyone who came to see me ‘in real life’ this week, too. On Thursday we ran out of chairs AND copies of the book at Waterstones in Taunton, where the lovely Fiona Mattesini interviewed me, I read a few passages, and there was a rich audience discussion.

And yesterday I visited the bookshop of dreams, Chocolate Books in Wiveliscombe. Again, a lovely group of really engaged people came along and we had a brilliant chat about life in the female body.

On my virtual Substack Book Tour there have been many stop-offs and you can find them all here. There are lots of different extracts if you want to get a flavour of the book.

And if you like to watch live chats, then I’m here talking to Toni Jones of the Shelf Help Club

and it’s also here as a podcast.

And now…what’s next?

Well, I am making plans.

I am building something new.

At the moment, it’s just a hazy vision on the distant horizon.

But it’s slowly coming into focus.

And it’s big, and different, and exciting!

If you want to help me clarify this vision, I’d love to hear from you about what you really need in your life right now, and (obviously), what you might specifically need from me.

I’m leaving the comments section open today to ALL subscribers, and I can’t wait to hear from you.

Thanks for supporting me as my new book has landed in the world.

Love for now, Milli x
