Who we become is largely constructed by what we like and don’t like. Typically, without much awareness, we create ourselves in the same way we fill a plate at the buffet.
But we can only choose from the dishes before us. If we don’t see someone doing something we like, it’s very unlikely we’ll ever do it ourselves.
Our friends and family are our biggest influencers, though we can get ideas from anywhere, including “influencers” 🙄. But when it comes to the critical interior infrastructures we build to understand the world, it takes more than a moment of scrolling.
Nothing excites me more than people whose ways I like. Be it their presence, kindness, or quiet confidence, I need time to see what I want to learn. And there is little that captivates me more than trying to see the world through the eyes and charms of people I admire.
Every last one of us has been dumped here in the cosmic middle of wherever the heck it is that we are. Other people are our only possible allies. Fortunately, anyone can become a critical part of our team. Total strangers. Politically opposed strangers. Convicted felons. But more likely, a neighbor or acquaintance.
Learning is everywhere. And lessons are both minute and life-changing. We only need to slow down and open ourselves up to the possibility.
That’s how I’m trying to roll.
