THESIS #12

My daughters are looking for their first part-time job. They are not old enough yet.
The older one scrolls through listings anyway, and we read them together.

Fortune cookie writer.
Emoji translator.
Seat filler.
Scent judge.
Sandwich architect.
CAPTCHA solver.

Real. Some paid better than my first job in the field.

And I find myself remembering what redirected me at the start of my career.
How one ad named me and redirected me for good.

That is what Thesis #12 is about.

In 2001 I had it all figured out. I was studying fashion design and I knew exactly where I belonged. Traditional manufacturing. Ready-to-wear. A safe, sensible plan, talked through with my parents. Signed off.

Curiosity would not leave me alone. I open the job site and scroll.

The sixth ad with the same demand. A company hiring an in-house graphic designer. The requirement, a degree in graphic design from the Academy of Fine Arts. Where I was studying textiles. That same year I transferred to graphic design, the field that promised the highest concentration of job ads.

A routine search outweighed years of planning.

I had always been fascinated by packaging, advertising, brands. Fashion a little more. I was not as good at it as I wanted to be. The ad redirected me.

You do not always become yourself by chasing a dream. Sometimes you just see a door that happens to be open, the moment you walk past it. No brave decision. I only had to notice. And find myself in it.

Now I watch my daughters. They are standing in the same place, a little earlier. They scroll. The listings we read together are wilder than the ones I scrolled through years ago.

We look closer. What strikes me is that these listings are about what a machine cannot do. Write a line a stranger fills with their own story. Hold someone over a screen. Sit in a room so it has a body in it, not empty space. Pass a CAPTCHA. Prove you are not a robot. Ordinary human things, the kind we know without schooling, are coming back as paid work. The machine takes everything rational. What is left is human, and suddenly has value.

And every new profession is a new word. It names a fascination that would otherwise stay unnamed.

A single ad named me. One word is no longer enough for them. They combine them, and that is how they reach the top of a niche where no one else stands in quite the same place.

Gen Z wants meaning and play more than safety. They will pay for an idea sooner than for a thing.* And their consumer behaviour mirrors their career choice.

I am on the same wavelength as this generation. Where it matters, we meet. I am not the skeptical millennial doubting they will manage without the hard school. In many ways they are more creative than we were.

Yes, they are fragile. Snowflakes, as people say. They need to be handled with more respect than we were handled with. That is precisely how they are making the whole society more sensitive, and I more than welcome it.

So they look for work the same way. Not the safest job. The one they can recognise themselves in, more delicately.

If I had their doors today, they would throw me somewhere I would never have dared to go on my own.

Identity is not set by a plan. It is set by demand at the right moment. An ad for a graphic designer found me. Something that does not yet have a name will find them.

I have never been more curious.

Žiadny vysnívaný job.

THESIS #12

V roku 2001 som to mala celé premyslené. Študovala som fashion design a presne vedela, kde je moje miesto. Tradičná výroba. Konfekcia. Bezpečný, rozumný plán, prekonzultovaný s rodičmi. Odklepnuté.

Lenže zvedavosť mi nedala pokoj. Otvorím profesia.sk a listujem.

A nájsť v tom samu seba.

Napísať odkaz, do ktorého si cudzí dosadí seba. Zostáva to ľudské, a zrazu má cenu.

Hľadá zmysel a hru.

V mnohých smeroch sú kreatívnejší než my.

Áno, sú krehkí. Snehové vločky, ako sa hovorí. Treba s nimi zaobchádzať rešpektujúcejšie, než sa kedysi zaobchádzalo s nami. Práve tým scitlivujú celú spoločnosť a to viac než vítam.

Tak hľadajú aj prácu. Nie tú najistejšiu. Tú, v ktorej sa ešte citlivejšie rozpoznajú.

Keby som mala dnes ich dvere, hodili by ma niekam, kam by som sa asi neopovážila.

Identitu neurčí plán. Určí ju dopyt v správnej chvíli. Mňa našiel inzerát na grafika. Ich nájde niečo, čo dnes ešte netušia.

Som zvedavá ako nikdy.
