This past month, I wrote about how to work with hourly-billed workers (e.g. designers, consultants, lawyers) and making most of conferences after attending ETH Denver.

But, I also decided to get back to my creative non-fiction roots. Did you know that in college I was almost going to minor in “writing”?

I was specializing in creative non-fiction — stories or essays using literary styles and techniques to illustrate a (mostly!) factually true narrative.

Instead of telling, let me share how I interpret creative non-fiction through 3 essays, written by College Mika and slightly edited by Present Mika.

  1. The Balikbayan Box - A small introductory excerpt from a longer piece I wrote called “Diaspora.”

  2. Gradients of a Hug - This used to be titled “Warm, Cold and In-Between” to describe 3 types of hugs, with 3 different people, illustrating 3 different feelings.

  3. And my personal favorite: Naked - The prompt for this assignment was “Spiritual.” I talk about 4 friends feeling lively and spiritual (read: inebriated and silly) strolling down a beach in Mexico.

These essays lean on the vulnerable - I hope you enjoy learning new glimpses of who I am. As always, open to feedback, the good and the bad.

Let me know if you want to read more of it - I’m personally hoping to get back to writing more in this style. It’s been a while but I forgot how much I enjoyed it!
