This week’s clinic is on a topic that a whole bunch of you have asked about - weight loss in midlife without GLP-1s - so I hope it’s helpful and I hope you’ll also see - it’s not just you!

Weight gain is common in midlife and may also compound a weight problem that you had long before your ovaries decided it was time to retire. But why?

You didn’t suddenly turn 50, start eating garbage and slobbing around the house all day, so what’s with the belly?

It’s a coordinated attack on your waistline involving hormones, changes in body composition and the grudge your metabolism is holding against you from all those diets we were told we needed to go on in the 90s.

Falling oestrogen, dysregulated cortisol and rising insulin all shift how and where we store fat. Dropping muscle mass can mean a slump in metabolism, and the metabolic memories of diets-gone-by mean your body is already on the look-out for any more attempts to get back into those jeans from 10 years ago.

Add stressful lives to the mix, and doing anything consistently can become even harder than ever.

Unfortunately, consistent is exactly what you’re going to have to be to have any chance of winning this one. But I know - you’ve got it in you.

  • The differences between you in your 30s and and you in midlife.

  • How you biology changes in midlife and why it means you’ve woken up with a belly that you never used to have.

  • Why what you eat matters more than what you don’t.

  • Why weight-lifting belts are IN and one-piece leotards are OUT.

  • Cameo appearances from Shakira, Winston Churchill and Nigella Lawson.
