The five around your five

Last week I told you to tell someone who’ll ask you about it.

I meant it. But I also owed you the next question, and I couldn’t get it out of my head all weekend. Who? Who is actually in the seat that asks? Who tells you the truth when you don’t want to hear it? Who is a few steps ahead of you and close enough to see? Who are you pouring into? And who, in your whole loud life, models rest without collapse?

Here is what I have learned building this thing for twenty years. Your steady five is only as strong as the five people who sit closest to it. Roots are the foundation. The people around you are the load-bearing walls. You cannot hold a whole life up alone. Believe me, I have tried.

So this week we audit the room. Not “cut out negative people.” You have heard that one a thousand times, and it does not help you at 6:47 on a Tuesday morning when you are deciding whether to actually make the calls. What helps is knowing which seats a building season requires, and who is currently sitting in them.

Here are the five. I have named them by role, not vibe, because vibes shift and roles don’t.

THE ACCOUNTABILITY SEAT

The person who asks you about your number.

Not “how are you doing.” Your number. The daily standard you wrote down. The bold move you committed to for July. Someone who says “it’s the twenty-third, how’s the chain looking?” and expects an actual answer.

I have two in this seat, and I need both. My coach pushes back on my excuses before I finish saying them. My marketing and growth coordinator drives. One protects the standard, one moves the work. If you find both in one person, marry them. If you don’t, don’t be embarrassed to need two.

Most of us don’t have this seat filled at all, and then we blame ourselves for inconsistency. Consistency isn’t primarily willpower. It’s witness. You keep the standard because someone knows the standard.

THE AHEAD SEAT

The person a few steps down the road you’re walking.

Not a celebrity you follow. Not a coach you have never met. Someone real. For me, it’s another team leader who has been in this role years longer than I have, and we are building toward the same kind of thing. When she tells me what she wrestled with three years ago, I take notes. Because I am three years behind her, and she is honest about the terrain.

The Ahead Seat turns “I don’t know if this is possible” into “she did it, and she’s not smarter than me.” Growth needs proof of concept sitting close enough to see.

The next three seats are the harder ones. The friend I left in the wrong seat too long. The one I’m actively looking to fill. PERMISSION, PLAINLY

You were not built to hold a whole life alone. That is not weakness. That is design. If the seats around you are half empty, that is not a character flaw. That is a room in progress. Building a room is holy work. You are allowed to do it.
