People sometimes ask me what therapy is like.

My answer is probably different than what they expect.

I don’t see myself as someone standing on a mountain telling people how to climb.

I see myself as a fellow traveler.

That may sound surprising coming from a therapist.

After all, I have spent years studying psychology, trauma, grief, relationships, the nervous system, and counseling. I am also finishing a doctorate in Christian Counseling. My training matters. Experience matters. Competence matters.

But none of those things makes me exempt from being human.

Like everyone else, I have known grief.

I have wrestled with loss.

I have questioned who I was after difficult seasons.

I have discovered that healing is rarely a straight line.

In many ways, my own life has taught me as much as my education ever could. The classroom gave me knowledge. Walking through loss, rebuilding, and learning to trust again gave that knowledge a heartbeat.

So, when someone walks into my office, I don’t see a problem to solve.

I see another human being who has been walking a difficult road.

Someone who has carried burdens that may not be visible.

Someone whose body may have been speaking long before words ever came.

Someone who is trying to make sense of experiences that have shaped the way they see themselves, others, and even God.

I simply have the privilege of walking beside them for a while.

One of the first things I often tell my clients is this:

“I don’t believe I’m your guide. I believe the Holy Spirit is your Guide. My role is to walk alongside you while together we become curious about what He’s already doing in your life.”

That changes everything.

It means I don’t have to have every answer.

It means my clients don’t have to perform or pretend.

It means neither of us has to carry the burden of perfection.

Instead, we become attentive.

We listen.

We notice.

We ask questions.

We grow curious about patterns, emotions, relationships, and the ways the body has been carrying stories the mind hasn’t yet found words for.

Healing isn’t something I do for another person.

It’s something I have the privilege of witnessing as truth, grace, and courage begin to come together.

Sometimes healing comes through insight.

Sometimes through grief.

Sometimes through forgiveness.

Sometimes through simply realizing you were never as alone as you thought you were.

I’ve also realized this is how I write.

I don’t write because I’ve figured life out.

I write because I’m still walking.

I’m still learning.

I’m still discovering places where grace quietly meets ordinary life.

If something I write resonates with you, perhaps it’s because we’ve walked through similar valleys.

Not identical ones.

But enough alike that the landscape feels familiar.

I don’t want to walk your journey for you.

I don’t believe anyone can.

But if my words remind you that you don’t have to walk it alone, then they’ve accomplished exactly what I hoped.

Perhaps that’s what we all need from time to time.

Not another expert standing at the finish line.

Just another fellow traveler who knows there is hope beyond the next bend in the road.

If you’re in a difficult season today, my hope is that you won’t measure yourself by how quickly you arrive, but by the courage it takes to keep taking the next step. Healing is rarely about finding a shortcut. More often, it’s about discovering that you don’t have to walk the road alone. Until next time,

Grace and peace,
