During the 2024 Trump campaign, when I was writing my book All or Nothing, I was in daily touch with members of Trump’s inner circle. One of their chief concerns was Natalie Harp, a young woman who had joined the campaign in 2022 as a low-level assistant and, within a matter of months, worked her way into Trump’s confidence, becoming the person he saw and spoke to more often than anyone else.
One of Harp’s jobs was to carry a portable printer and constantly supply Trump with printouts of emails, laudatory articles, and fan art gathered from across the internet. On various occasions, she included letters she wrote to him which were, some staff members believed, of a particularly disquieting nature: too intimate, too soul-bearing, too inappropriate for anyone to send to his or her boss, no less the once and, as it happened, future president.
Some of these alarming letters were passed to the senior campaign staff, as well as to the Secret Service, which began to have concerns about the candidate’s safety. As an example of the campaign’s turmoil, they were passed to me.
Excerpts of the letters were included in All or Nothing when it was published in February 2025. Eighteen months later, and as Harp has all but cemented her position next to the President of the United States, she is finally receiving the wide scrutiny her access to Trump—and power in the West Wing—deserves.
