Michael Sonnenfeldt · MUUSINGS from an entrepreneur trying to make sense of the world.

I’m pleased to share a link to my first long-form essay for The Atlantic, published this morning HERE.

For decades, most American Jews felt politically and morally aligned with progressive movements. After October 7th, many experienced what felt like indifference, hostility, or even betrayal from parts of that coalition — while remaining deeply uncomfortable with elements of the right wing agenda, despite Republicans’ strong support for Israel. And lets not minimize the elements on the right that are also hostile to Jews and Israel.

In this personal and at times uncomfortable essay, I wrestle with the historical memory Jews carry, the legitimacy and tragedy bound up in Israel’s challenges with her neighbors and Iran, the resilience of American democracy, and the political and moral dislocation so many are struggling to process in real time. It’s intended less as an argument than as an attempt at intellectual honesty about tensions many feel but are reluctant to articulate publicly.

My thanks to The Atlantic for publishing it. I’d very much value your reactions once you’ve had a chance to read it.
