Music is fascinating, isn’t it? I’m constantly blown away by how I can hear a tune and be transported to a very specific place. Take, for example, the main theme from Jurassic Park. Funnily enough, I’m not taken back to any specific viewing of the film.
It brings me back to middle school band, sitting in these uncomfortable blue plastic chairs next to my pal Jeffrey. We were rehearsing a medley from the movie. As the top two chairs in the section, we got a lot of melody in the first clarinet parts, including the melody in the main theme. And during one particular rehearsal, he and I belted out that part perfectly in sync in a way that I have yet to replicate in the two decades since.
What fascinates me even more than something like an excerpt from a film score carrying me all the way back to middle school is how you and I can listen to the same piece and feel wildly different emotions. I can listen to the same song today and hear it differently than I did 15 years ago.
My favorite band is Linkin Park. They have been since I was in high school. I really fell in love with their music not long after Minutes to Midnight was released in 2007. A Thousand Suns was the first album release I got to experience. I vividly remember sitting in my bedroom in 2010, listening to the album from start to finish as it was released on iTunes.
