Michaelann Gardner · The Year of the Egg - Writing by Michaelann Gardner

A word about being extremely online:

I got myself in a bit of a pickle because I did want to write about how I was feeling about being in the waiting phase, but then what do I write next as my life unfolds in real time? Do I tell you the outcome? Do I wait? Do I make you read between the lines?

Well!

Yes, as a couple of you have asked, I am in fact……..(drumroll) pregnant!

Right away, I told the most important people, starting with my donor, my family, my closest friends. I loved cherishing their excited reactions and even more so working through some really big, overwhelming feelings with them.

I want you to know and stay aware that what you’re reading here is content. It’s content as honest as I can write it, but I do write with a certain selectivity for beauty and meaning, and I do keep many of the deepest things private. People have commented that my memoir was extremely intimate, but what I don’t know how to explain, exactly, is that just because I’m talking about sex, doesn’t mean it’s actually my most intimate experiences. My most intimate experiences—with my sister, my best friends—don’t usually make it to paper.

I know the deal I’m making here. I tell you stories about my life, and I do it in as beautiful and interesting a way as possible, so of course, you care and are engaged in the outcomes. But: this isn’t a novel, or a movie; this is a person writing in real time, and I have the same desires for privacy and retreat as any person. For example, if I miscarry, and therefore if I try again, or if I don’t try again, I don’t know if I will write about all of that, or even be open to answering questions about it. Or any number of other intimate experiences.

In the meantime, I have about six new essays brewing, and I can’t wait to share my thoughts with you and hear yours in return.

Thank you for being here. Thank you for reading. Thank you for being invested in my outcomes and hopes and wishes! 🙏
