The Rooms We Lost

A month ago, in an art gallery in Sofia, I built a world.

Unmissable a world with its own logic, its own temperature, its own rules of black and white.

People walked in as guests and, somewhere over the course of the evening, became part of the work itself.

I won’t tell you exactly how. Some of it should stay where it happened.

But I’ll tell you what it was for.

Most rooms today are built around a purpose you can name: a panel, a launch, a network, a pitch.

People arrive performing the version of themselves that purpose requires, and they leave a little emptier than they came.

CHECKMATE is built around something you can only feel once you’re inside it.

I’m interested in what happens when the usual scaffolding is removed.

When no one is selling anything.

When the beauty in the room is exact rather than decorative, and the people in it were chosen.

Something shifts.

People stop reaching for their lines.

They say the truer thing.

They begin to reveal themselves because the room made it safe to.

That is the whole intention.

In chess, checkmate is the moment the board finally shows what was always true…who saw further, what the game was actually about.

That’s what I want my multi-sensory experiences to do: to reveal something about the people inside it and the moment we’re all living through.

The salon, at its best, was build for something deeper than elegance and beauty only.

Known as an arcane place where the right people, in the right proximity, could say things they couldn’t say anywhere else, and where something new could form in the space between them.

We replaced that with content and panels and exhaustion.

I think people are quietly starving for the real thing.

Sofia was the CHECKMATE edition, but it will not be the last salon.
