Our evolved filters, linguistic processing, skin, taste, smell, even the blood-brain barrier, will not be enough to keep bad, hostile, deceptive, or unknown things from affecting us.
These are ancestral protective mechanisms. They were not built for a world of engineered molecules, synthetic pathogens, persuasive AIs, memetic attacks, ambient sensing, spoofed identities, hidden supply-chain contamination, and agents operating across scales from nano to macro.
In other words: evolved human filters are becoming inadequate for a world full of engineered, opaque, and superhuman agents. Our current reality is very porous and there are numerous attack vectors that eventually will be easily and cost-effectively exploited with new technology.
That creates a gigantic market for augmentations that help us assess other agents and threats at all scales. This is not just “better health tech” or “better cybersecurity.” It is broader.
Augmented epistemic immunity.
Systems that help humans detect, classify, predict, and resist harmful influence, intrusion, contamination, deception, and manipulation.
threat sensing: wearables, implants, home sensors, environmental scanners, authenticity checks, real-time air/food/water analysis
threat interpretation: systems that do not just detect anomalies, but explain them
protective mediation: filters, shields, quarantining, content gating, chemical neutralization, sensory overlays, attention firewalls
trust infrastructure: provenance, identity, audit trails, authenticity layers
cognitive augmentation: tools that improve judgment under uncertainty
The deeper point is that this is not only about defense against obvious evil. It is about unknown unknowns.
Once civilization can create things that exceed unaided human sensory and cognitive screening, we will need meta-filters.
Humans will need exocortical and exobiological immune systems.
These systems will not merely help us detect toxins, pathogens, spoofing, manipulation, or hidden machine/entity agency. They will increasingly mediate our relation to reality itself.
These three risks are in order of difficulty.
1. Protection from external control may itself become external control
Whoever controls these systems may influence what counts as safe, true, trustworthy, authentic, suspicious, or even perceptible in the first place. This is much more than a product risk. It is a civilizational control point. There will likely be all-in-one solutions that combine sensing, interpretation, provenance, and intervention. Once these become deeply embedded, they may function as compulsory intermediaries between humans and the world.
The solution here is independently verified, perpetually verifiable, open technology with strong auditability and distributed trust.
2. Offloading too much weakens the native organism and mind.
Our brains, and indeed our whole body, are built to economize. Functions that are no longer exercised tend to degrade. So even if such augmentations become necessary, relying on them too heavily may further erode unaided judgment, situational awareness, social intuition, sensory discrimination, and immune robustness. We may become safer in one sense, while becoming more dependent and less intrinsically capable in another.
The solution here may actually require deeper integration with massive fail-safes and fallbacks, rather than loose external modules that merely augment. The risk of ending up with phantom cognits, will be very real.
3. Augmentation will result in incompatible subjective worlds
Today, mediation layers are already vulnerable to corporate, political, and institutional capture. But the deeper problem comes later: as augmentations broaden perception, alter cognition, and eventually introduce new modes of experience or even new qualia, different populations may no longer inhabit sufficiently similar worlds. At that point, the problem is not mere bias or censorship. It is ontological, epistemic, and subjective drift between agents.
The solution here will require major efforts to manage divergence between emerging civilizations and cognitive lineages while preserving enough mutual legibility for coordination.
As these augmentations diverge, and as different populations adopt different cognitive prosthetics, interpretive filters, sensory extensions, and machine intermediaries, we risk not merely unequal access to reality, but a breakdown in shared reality itself.
This is where the issue connects to what I called the intersubjectivity collapse: the breakdown of the network of unspoken rules and mutual predictability that holds a civilization together.
In a world populated by increasingly different kinds of minds, modalities, and agent architectures, cooperation becomes harder because the basic assumptions that underwrite trust, law, communication, and coordination no longer cleanly transfer.
Protective augmentation is not just about shielding humans from external threats. It is also about managing the growing intersubjective distance between humans, post-humans, machine agents, hybrid agents, and institutions whose internal processes are increasingly opaque.
So first we will need artificial immune systems because the world becomes too complex and adversarial for our naturally evolved filters. Later, we will need them because the very possibility of a common world is under immense pressure. Great riches await those who bet on these opportunities, but the real riches for post-humans will come from being able to retain cognitive sovereignty.
The question is, how to enact that?
