Union County, the new verité drama shot by Ohio native Adam Meeks in his hometown of Bellefontaine, is grounded by an excellent performance from Will Poulter (The Bear) as a recovering opioid addict in a court-mandated treatment program. Wednesday, August 5, Film Columbus will present an advance screening of the film and a Q&A with Meeks and Poulter. Free tickets are here while they last.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the blockbuster of the week, following Tom Holland’s Spidey through an existential crisis caused by the No Way Home finale, in which he saves the world by allowing Peter Parker to be completely forgotten. In addition to another team-up by Holland and Zendaya, and appearances by Jon Bernthal as Punisher and Sadie Sink in a role shrouded in mystery, the latest MCU movie has Destin Daniel Cretton in the director’s chair. He’s also behind Disney+’s Wonder Man, one of the best series of 2026.
I already wrote a bit about Gregg Araki’s I Want Your Sex after seeing it at the Provincetown Film Fest. While it isn’t Apocalypse Trilogy-level Araki, its portrayal of an out-of-control dom-sub relationship between Olivia Wilde’s artist and Cooper Hoffman’s studio assistant takes a daring yet silly approach to sex, power, and contemporary art. And it’s lighting up multiplex screens around Columbus in the coming week.
In more wholesome multiplex fare, there’s a 55th anniversary limited run of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and a big-screen encore presentation of the Metropolitan Opera’s Aida.
Gateway has Sidney Lumet’s Network in 4K; no lie, it’s essential. And the theater’s From Book to Film series this weekend has something you might’ve missed during the pandemic: 2021’s Passing. Rebecca’s Hall’s perfectly cast, accumatively powerful interpersonal drama, starring Ruth Negga and Tessa Thompson, is also beautifully shot in black-and-white, so see it big while you can.
It’s another great week for international classics at the Wex. Saturday, there’s La haine, a cult classic view of racial tensions in 1990s France by actor/director Mathieu Kassovitz (maybe better known as the dream man in Amèlie). Next Thursday brings the 1988 movie that made Pedro Almodóvar an arthouse name, the delightfully wacky Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. Bonus: it’s preceded by a cocktail tasting courtesy of Antiques on High and a new short from animator Kelly Gallagher.
The latest all-night horror marathon at Studio 35 rolls out Saturday with a “Gone Camping” theme. Selections include four of the Friday the 13th films (the 1980 original and the 1982 3D sequel among them) as well as 1983’s beloved cult hit Sleepaway Camp.
Next Thursday, Cinema Columbus partners again with Columbus Museum of Art, this time for a free screening of documentary shorts in connection with a group show of contemporary Asian American artists. Personally, I’m excited to see part of my childhood repped in the lineup by Kowloon. For anyone who still mourns the loss of iconic East side Polynesian restaurant Kahiki, Kowloon is Boston’s counterpart, and it’s still going. In the short, Erin Ramirez and Mona Xia share the story of the family that’s operated it for three generations.
