Melody Henderson · Opening to the Day

Sunday, August 2, 2026, sunrise: 5:54, 71°

I’m normally all complaints when it comes to the wind, but something about today’s feels comforting, softly enveloping rather than gusting from side to side. It welcomes me to this car-free Sunday when I get to walk where I want on the open expanse of the road. The wind blows down from the hill and around the curve to meet me. Its sound causes me to check if I should move to the shoulder for an approaching car. “Just me,” the wind says as it continues down the street. “Enjoy the liminal. This break between the busy days.”

The wind picks up, letting me know something more is on the way. I step onto the front porch, eager to lay down the words I’ve been mulling over.

Raindrops fall.

The best of two experiences: an immersing in the natural world as it wakens and stirs, and a witnessing as the land is quenched.
