The other day I was at a karaoke bar in Capitol Hill with a couple of friends… we’re about to close out and my song comes on. So American by Olivia Rodrigo.
I love this song. I think about the idea of someone feeling this way about me:
When he laughs at all my jokes
And he says I’m so American
Oh God, it’s just not fair of him
To make me feel this much
I’ll go anywhere he goes
And he says I’m so American
Oh God, I’m gonna marry him
If he keeps this shit up
So there I was, drunk as shit, so ready to karaoke this. I expected people to join… but turns out nobody knew the song? How? It’s Olivia >:(
There was some redemption in singing that song alone. There’s something pure about expressing your own truth without a single care in the world. In any case, it didn’t matter. I sang the song and felt every word. And I hope someone found that amusing.
Expressing my truth. I love that. Growing as a man somehow always comes back to integrating my inner paradoxes, doesn’t it?
