Thanks to the Farmer’s Almanac, I finally learned what the phrase “dog days of Summer” means — and I had no idea it had anything to do with the stars.
I’m enjoying the dog days, regardless. And I used the week off (apologies for no Substack last week, but… vacation was much needed) to get in some beach time where we built sand castles and picked up trash, ate lots of ice cream, celebrated my FIL’s 75th birthday, I even got in two nice bike rides, and made basil butter pasta that we put some baked tilefish over for a perfectly summery meal. And for the first time, I took the ferry from Cape May (NJ) to Lewes (Delaware), and was mesmerized by all the jellyfish1 in the Delaware Bay.

Brilliant project: Photographer Alexey Yurenev asked how long it takes to earn a dollar, and then used that time to determine the shutter speed, which determines how visible people would be in the image. The longer it took, the more invisible they are. For more about the work, here’s an interview with Alexey.
