talk story - Melissa Llanes Brownlee

I named this area talk story, a Hawaiian pidgin phrase which means exactly what it says. I will talk story about my life, share stories, or whatever I feel like because that's what a blog is, isn't it? And to be honest, I am not really selling anything but myself, and that's what this whole social media and online presence is all about.

I would also…

Is It Just Me?

How are you all doing? Are you avoiding doomscrolling so that you don’t wallow in despair? Or get angry at shitty ads or AI slop? Like seriously…I can’t be the only one. I just try to keep my head down and try not to feel helpless will all of the things I have no control over. I am still not writing (much to my publisher’s chagrin…stupid unfinished novel) but I started reading for pleasure last…

What Are you Playing?

As you know, I haven’t been writing much so I do a lot of other things to keep myself from wallowing… like playing video games. Recently, I played the new James Bond game which is a mix of Hitman and Uncharted. (I love Uncharted.) I play on baby mode because I play games for the story and not for the “get gud.” I really enjoyed the storyline. It felt very true to a classic Bond movie. Little bit…

Today is my last day of my epic 8-day road trip through Nagano, Gifu, Aichi, Mie, Wakayama, Nara and Shiga. We head back to Gunma in a few hours. It’s been wonderful but also exhausting. The last few days a heat wave hit the area and it’s been a struggle not to get heat stroke while riding our motorcycles. Ago Bay We visited so many beautiful places. Rode along the famous Nakasendo and beautiful…

Heading To Mie On My Bike and Ms. Aligned Publication This Fall

So, this morning I leave for an 8-day road trip on my motorcycle down to Mie Prefecture. I am hoping for a mental reset… if the heat and humidity doesn’t kill me. I’m really looking forward to some wonderful ocean views and some great drone videos as well as just the meditation of riding through the wonderful mountains and along the gorgeous coastlines. I would also like to celebrate a future…

When Will I Start Writing Again?

I have no idea. This is probably the longest I have gone without writing. Every time I think about it, a kind of weird aversion pops up. Like when you eat or drink too much of something and your body and brain is like yeah don’t want that… I know this is part of the writer’s life and I will get back to writing eventually but yeah this is kind of weird. Wherever you all are in your writing journey,…

Wigleaf Top 50 and Dealing With Life Stuff

It was really wonderful to celebrate with everyone who made the Wigleaf Top 50 lists this year. The outpouring of support in our community is always a joy. It reminds me how lucky we are in the flash world. Thank you to everyone who celebrated with me getting onto the top 50 this year. If you haven’t had a chance, I hope you check out my weird little micro published in Barrelhouse ’s Baby, One…

Hard Skin’s 4th Birthday

On June 21, it was my first book’s 4th birthday. It was a little bittersweet (no pun intended) for me. I sat there thinking about whether I had it in me to post on social media about it…and I realized I really didn’t. I admit I have been in kind of a weird funk. Depression and anxiety have been my constant companions lately. Things that I should be celebrating just haven’t seemed worthy of…

National Flash Fiction Day's FlashFlood and An Acceptance

Every year, it’s always a pleasure to be a participant in the National Flash Fiction Day’s Flash Flood with all of my fellow flash writers. If you missed my little micro, here it is: “ before the first bite ” - inspired by my trip to Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia and also by the idea of how many spiders we consume in our sleep… I really do like durian. I think it’s like eating a sweet garlic…
