What are we really buying

I am on deadline so I am in front of my computer ALL THE TIME. Words, words, words as Bo Burnham sings. And since my hobby is um, writing, here I am. I will get to all the fun paid subscription thingies, I SWEAR!!!! Like the fun deleted sexy scenes from Rings of Fate (So hot I gotta fan myself!!) and… I dunno? More writing tips?

When I am not writing I am on vacation or shopping. I keep trying to find a cheapo hobby but my hobbies are trendy restaurants, private member’s clubs, designer clothes and resort hotels. So this is the cheapest hobby I have lol.

Anyway, I started selling my clothes on the Real Real because it was getting to be A PROBLEM. Then I started buying clothes from the Real Real.

And now I think, what on earth are we buying when we buy designer fashion? Like, hear me out, but what if we don’t really own anything of value?? And once you get eight bucks for some Balenciaga sandals you bought for twelve hundred, you realize… wow, I should have listened to my investment banker brother and bought index funds instead.

Like that episode where Carrie spent all her money on shoes so she doesn’t have a down payment for an apartment. When it came out in my 20s I laughed and laughed with everyone else. But now I just think WOW THAT IS PATHETIC!!!! I hope my kid never grows up to be her.

I haven’t bought anything since my mom died, so maybe it’s grief. Or maybe I’m growing up. Or maybe, because I get pennies on the dollar for the screamingly trendy outrageously priced clothing I bought TO FEEL SPECIAL, I can just feel special without it?

As my BFF Margie says, “Ponder.”

What are we really buying. A dopamine rush. A feeling of being like Babe Paley in that photo. Wanting to think we’re beautiful. I dunno.

I still like shopping but for now, I’m shopping in my closet. Get thee behind me, Memorial Day Sales! Why do I need to buy anything when I have all of this:

Here I am in a Miu Miu jacket and striped shirt, Ann Taylor skirt, Madewell belt, The Row bag, loafers from Rome. I like the outfit. Hmmm. Maybe I just need to buy more Miu Miu??!! BWAHAHAHAHA!!!

Anyway, back to my regularly scheduled deadline.
