This is an expanded version of my Times column (£) today.
It turns out that I represent the “woke” onslaught against western civilisation. Who knew?
It was certainly something of a surprise. I’ve been banging on for years about the onslaught mounted by fashionable left-wing ideologies against western civilisation and the urgent need to defend it.
Nevertheless, I’d apparently committed the anti-civilisational crime of hugely enjoying and admiring Christopher Nolan’s film The Odyssey, based on Homer’s great epic about the protracted return home of Odysseus from the Trojan war, and which I wrote about here.
The reaction to the film has been a seismic eruption. People either raved about it or treated it as the desecration of a sacred text. Nolan has been accused of twisting the poem to make it relevant and “woke” for a modern audience, thus destroying a pillar of western civilisation. The culture war has come to Troy.
