The way the sun shown through the dark clouds, creating the perfect combination of misty grey-blue above and below us. So beautiful picture could never do it justice.
The way the salt air made your damp hair curl.
The way you ran into the ocean with reckless abandon.
The way you kept pulling my arm, asking me to lead you deeper, deeper into the sea.
The way your request felt eerily similar to one I so often sense from above- to stretch out my hand in trust; to dive deeper in to waters unknown.
The way the dolphins swam so close we could see the water glisten as it sprayed from their spiracles.
(The way I googled the word “spiracles” because who uses the word “blowhole” in a poem, anyway?)
The way the dolphin calves stick close to their mamas then suddenly seem to let loose to play- breaking themselves free; showing off mid-air.
The way all this causes me to pause in wonder at the beauty and the mystery of life here on earth.
Out there on the water- are those dolphin mamas like me- hesitant, protective, wary? are those calves like you- pulling at their mamas for more, more?
