A century and a half before the French Revolution, Cardinal Richelieu dedicated his life to advancing the French monarchy over competing power centers such as the papacy, Hapsburgs, and Médicis.
Richelieu thus had little patience for Father Urbain Grandier of Loudon, who opposed Richelieu’s order to demolish the town walls, calculated to increase local dependence on the national government.
Grandier then published a scathing satire of Richelieu as well as a treatise in opposition to clerical celibacy.
