Powerful AI will change our institutions. Yet most of our attention is focused on aligning or regulating AI, while treating our institutions as fixed.
Together with researchers working at OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind and leading universities and non-profits, we just launched Pax Machina: a new publication about the institutions we need for powerful AI.
Pax Machina grew out of our Paris workshop on AGI institutions, but it is not an MAI project. Apart from us, it is edited by Maximilian Kroner Dale, Séb Krier, Rachel Calcott, Noemi Dreksler, Liam Patell, and Philip Tomei. The Editorial Board consists of Samuel Hammond, Iason Gabriel, Saffron Huang, Peter Railton, Seth Lazar, Nora Ammann, Tan Zhi-Xuan, and Dean Ball.We are aiming to publish concrete institutional proposals, a sharp objection to one, or an analysis that changes how a class of institutions should be designed. A piece might propose a new mechanism, explain how AI alters an existing institution, identify a failure mode, draw a specific design lesson from history, or offer a roadmap based on future capability thresholds.
The bar for publication is specificity. We’re looking for more than claims that AI will upend our social infrastructure; we want the design details: what should change, how would it work, who holds the authority, and what could go wrong?
We are open for submissions! To pitch a piece, write to us at editors@paxmachinamag.com.
Stay tuned for more,
