It’s getting hotter again, and we can all sense summer in Toronto is just around the corner.
The buzz on our streets and in our parks creates a vibration of excitement. CafeTO is off to a great start. The City’s pools are preparing for opening, with a comprehensive plan to handle heatwaves (more on this soon!).
The unpredictable and intense heatwaves do create danger for vulnerable people. That’s why in this year’s budget, I started by doubling the funding for free Air Conditioners for low-income seniors. When we received an unprecedented number of applications this Spring, we went back and found more funding to expand the criteria to include families with young kids too.
I’m happy to share that everyone who applied and was eligible, will receive a free AC this summer. Getting 2400 AC units installed in the homes of Torontonians who need them.
As Mayor, keeping Toronto safe will always be a top priority for me - and I’m happy to share a recent announcement that will make a real difference.
We are expanding CityServe once again.
Here’s how the CityServe program works. We identify youth in need, and we connect them with employment. Running year-round, the program focuses on building meaningful employment opportunities, mentorship and violence prevention support.

I believe that if we empower and support youth, especially those most at risk, we can create safer neighbourhoods for everyone. By expanding CityServe, we’re giving teenagers access to work experience, a chance to give back to their communities, and positive path forward.
This program is an essential part of the City’s strategy to tackle youth violence in Toronto, and our efforts to make sure that every child in Toronto is set up to succeed.
As we kick summer off with Pride Month and FIFA, I look forward to meeting many of you on the streets and soccer pitches of Toronto.
Yours,
Olivia Chow
