Provider Data Accuracy Auditing Toolkit

At Maven One, we use a three-tiered framework to assess provider data called CVA - Completeness, Validity, and Accuracy. (We talked about this in a lot of detail in our previous premium newsletter, The Provider Data Validation Toolkit.)

Completeness and Validity are things that can be defined and evaluated programmatically - deploying technology to chunk through hundreds of thousands or millions of records, find and flag issues, and perform automated correction.

Accuracy is a little trickier. We define accurate data as being current and correct. In other words, if you give the average member a record from your provider directory - a provider’s name, specialty, group affiliation, address, and phone number - they should be able to call and make an appointment with that provider. (Assuming, of course, that the provider is accepting new members.)

The problem is that complete and valid data can look exactly like accurate data. All the elements are there, properly formatted, the address is a real place that exists on the map, and the phone number has all its digits in the right places.

So how do you know if you have accurate data?

Well, one way is to conduct an audit. We’re going to outline a recommended approach for auditing your provider directory in a way that makes sense and can help you to understand the state of your provider data.
