Why so many portals?
Because they’re efficient. They allow that quick escape from disaster. (Exit, stage right!) They let you hit the reset button or bypass consequence.
They are cheap modes of travel, too. No need to wrestle with the physics of warp drives or time dilation. Open a door. Step through. Problem solved.
So what makes the portal (or the Stellar Bridge) in BETWEEN and FORWARD different?
It isn’t an escape. It isn’t about adventure. It’s about grief, and what it does to you.
In BETWEEN, the portal is a point of contention to some. And to Marda, our heroine, it is the enemy. It is a living python that has swallowed her family.
And she will go inside the body of that serpent with swords if necessary, and tear it apart to get them back.
Because that’s what grief looks like when it turns into love with teeth.
Marda is all of us when grief demands answers.
